Princess Catherine appeared to pay a subtle tribute to Princess Diana during her landmark visit to Italy on Wednesday, stepping out in a commanding powder blue tailored suit that echoed one of the late royal’s most memorable fashion moments from the 90’s. The Princess of Wales, 44, arrived in Reggio Emilia for the start of her hugely significant two-day overseas visit centred around her Early Years campaign, where crowds gathered in their thousands to welcome the future Queen.

Royal fashion watchers were quick to spot striking similarities between Catherine’s polished ensemble and a pastel blue look famously worn by Princess Diana during a Mediterranean trip with then-Prince Charles in the mid-1990s. For the major solo overseas engagement, Princess Catherine opted for a sharply tailored powder blue suit by Edeline Lee, pairing the elegant two-piece with a soft white blouse, matching accessories and Monica Vinader’s Nura Pearl Necklace.

The modern power suit immediately turned heads thanks to its clean tailoring, flowing wide-leg trousers and refined colour palette, but the look subtly nodded to Diana’s iconic pastel skirt-suit era.

Princess Diana famously wore a remarkably similar powder blue and white ensemble while holidaying in the Mediterranean with Prince Charles in 1995, when the pair visited Sardinia.

The late Princess of Wales paired the pastel jacket with a coordinating skirt and white blouse, reflecting the sharply polished silhouettes that dominated royal fashion during the decade.

While Catherine’s version felt distinctly modern through its wide-leg tailoring and contemporary cut, several elements mirrored Diana’s original look.
