While all of them attended their former bandmate Liam Payne’s funeral, some members of One Direction reportedly last reunited for a sad reason.

Former One Direction member and solo artist Liam Payne was reportedly laid to rest a month after his accidental death. The funeral, which reportedly took place on November 20 in London, was attended by his former bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan.

After they announced their hiatus in 2016, the members of One Direction embarked on solo careers. While their recent reunion was under truly sad circumstances, their last semi-reunion was also reportedly not too happy as some of the members supported Louis Tomlinson’s solo performance after his mother’s death. Malik reportedly did not attend.

A little over a month after his death in Buenos Aires, Liam Payne was reportedly laid to rest in London. The funeral was attended by former One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan, as well as Simon Cowell, James Corden, and Payne’s ex-girlfriend Cheryl (via People).

While this was the first time the members of one of the most popular bands of all time had reunited in a few years, it was for a truly heartbreaking reason. They had reportedly last performed together on stage during the On The Road Again Tour after which they went on hiatus following Malik’s departure from the band.

However, some members of the band, including Payne reportedly reunited back in 2016 to support bandmate Louis Tomlinson’s debut solo performance on The X-Factor. Except for Malik, everyone else had reportedly showed up to support Tomlinson, who had lost his mother a few days before (via The Sun). A source reportedly told The Sun,

Harry, Niall, and Liam all wanted to be there to support Louis tonight for what was undoubtedly one of the most difficult moments of his life. It was an incredible and special thing for them to get back together as a four and be like brothers again. Niall flew in overnight from New York so he could be there and Liam came from Los Angeles. It was that important they were together.

While they did not join the singer on stage, Styles, Payne, and Horan reportedly supported him from backstage. Tomlinson’s mother, Johannah Deakin had reportedly passed away after battling leukemia. The singer performed his debut single Just Hold On.

Liam Payne Hinted At A One Direction Reunion Six Years Ago

At the height of their career, One Direction was compared to The Beatles and was one of the most popular bands of all time. Formed by Simon Cowell with five rejected singers from The X-Factor, the band produced multiple award-winning songs and albums. They announced an indefinite hiatus in 2016 after the departure of Zayn Malik.

While the five never reunited since their last performance on tour in 2015, late member Liam Payne hinted at a reunion of the band back in 2018. According to The Express, Payne mentioned that the singers were talking and now that some of them had great solo careers, it was the right time to reunite. He said,

You know I think it (a reunion) will happen at some point in the distant future. We’ve all spoken about it and, you know, the dream for this most fantastic show that could be, is amazing. With everybody being so successful, this in part now is so important for us to be able to make that show.

The reunion never happened and the members seemed to have gotten busy with their solo careers even more.
