Fox News’ senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked the White House Wednesday why Elon Musk could dress casually in the Oval Office—after the storm over Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky not wearing a suit.

“We know that some officials here were mad that Zelensky showed up last week without a suit for his meeting in the Oval Office,” Doocy asked Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who smirked as he made the comment. That smirk nearly melted away when Doocy added, “But Elon Musk never wears a suit.”

Leavitt offered the quick defense that “he did last night” during Trump’s address to Congress.

Still, Doocy continued, “So what is the dress code?”

Despite Musk traipsing around the White House in a “tech support” t-shirt and a suit jacket even though he’s a major federal contractor and the recognizable head of the administration efforts to cut government spending, conservatives have had little criticism for Musk’s attire.

But in the case of Zelensky, Trump first mocked the Ukrainian president’s attire to his face when he arrived at the White House and then Brian Glenn—GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s reporter boyfriend—confronted him about it during the Oval Office meeting.

“Why don’t you wear a suit?” the Real America’s Voice reporter asked. “You’re at the highest level in this country’s office, and you refuse to wear a suit. Do you own a suit?” Zelensky shot back that he would wear a “costume” once the war in his country was over.

Doocy asked Leavitt if Musk was “spooked” by Zelensky getting kicked out of the Oval Office for not wearing a suit.

“No, I don’t think so,” she replied, “I’m just pointing out that he did wear a suit last night. And I think the president liked that very much—and he looked great.”
