Harry Potter is an epic journey that leads fans through seven books and eight movies. The tale of the titular boy wizard finally comes to an end in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. However, the characters’ lives continue even after the defeat of Voldemort. While the books end with the memorable, if simple sentence, “All was well,” things weren’t so simple.
The main characters of Harry Potter experience new challenges in their lives as adults. The scars of the Second Wizarding War are always with them. Nonetheless, they endeavor to overcome their past and build a brighter future, all for the sake of the new generation of witches and wizards.
Updated on August 2nd, 2024, by Andrea Sandoval: Harry Potter has a great variety of amazing characters. Potterheads grew up seeing the main characters of the series grow up to become great heroes or powerful villains. We updated this article to include the fate of more Harry Potter characters.
Hedwig Was One of the First Deaths in Deathly Hallows
Perished in
The Battle of the Seven Potters
Hedwig was a gift from Hagrid to Harry before starting Hogwarts. Hedwig was more than a pet, though. She was Harry’s friend and sometimes his only company at the Dursleys. Hedwig was incredibly loyal to the Boy Who Lived, often even pecking his best friends to write back letters. Once, she even visited Hermione and Ron so they could deliver Harry presents on his birthday.
Unfortunately, Hedwig dies at the end of the saga. In the book, she’s a random death during Voldemort’s attack during the Battle of the Seven Potters. Harry can’t even give her a proper burial as the body inside the cage was destroyed together with Hagrid’s sidecar. In the movie, though, Hedwig sacrifices her life to save Harry from an Avada Kedavra, which many believe was a much better ending for the beloved owl.

Here’s Why Bill Weasley’s Job is Actually Extremely Problematic
Bill Weasley is a beloved character in the Harry Potter series, but fans find his job as a Curse-Breaker in Egypt too problematic.
11
The Weasley’s eldest sibling, Bill, met Fleur when the latter spent some time working in Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Readers already knew Fleur from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when she was Beauxbeatons Champion for the Triwizard Tournament. The two hit it off almost immediately and got married in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
After the Death Eaters attack at the wedding, Bill and Fleur went to live at Shell Cottage, where the Golden Trio spent some time recovering after they were attacked at Malfoy’s Manor. Bill and Fleur fought and survived the Battle of Hogwarts and went on to have three children together: Victoire, Dominique, and Louis.
Oliver Wood Had a Great Quidditch Career
Profession
Married
Reserve Keeper for Puddlemore United
Unknown
Oliver Wood was Harry’s talented Quidditch Captain in the Gryffindor team. Unsurprisingly, when he graduated from Hogwarts he pursued a Quidditch career and became the reserve Keeper of Puddlemore United, one of the most respected Quidditch teams in the British and Irish Quidditch League.
Oliver was one of the many people who traveled to Hogwarts to fight against Voldemort and his Death Eaters. He was in charge of moving the bodies, including Colin Creevey’s, during the lull in the battle. Fortunately, he didn’t die in the Battle of Hogwarts, but there isn’t any more information about his future.
Teddy Lupin Grew Up in a Better World
Profession
Married
Hogwarts student
No, but dating Victoire Weasley
In the last installment of the Harry Potter series, Tonks gives birth to her son, named Teddy after his late grandfather. Both Remus and Tonks die in the Battle of Hogwarts, leaving Ted an orphan. However, Teddy had a happy life, raised by his grandmother, Andromeda, and his godfather, Harry Potter.
Teddy inherited his mother’s Metamorphmagus abilities but was lucky enough to not be a werewolf like his father. The last people know about the young boy is that he’s attending his seventh year of Hogwarts as a Hufflepuff and the Head Boy. He’s also dating Victoire Weasley, Bill and Fleur’s daughter.
Cho Chang Is Happily Married
Profession
Married
Unknown
Yes, a Muggle
Cho Chang was Harry’s first girlfriend in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. However, things don’t go well when Hermione indirectly curses Cho’s best friend after she reveals information about Dumbledore’s Army. The two break up, which is likely the best outcome, as they don’t have much in common.
There isn’t much information about Cho Chang after she survives the Battle of Hogwarts, but fans do know that the woman is happily married to a Muggle, so that’s amazing for her, after everything she went through with Cedric and Harry. It is possible, as well, that Cho Chang is living a Muggle life with her husband.

Mad-Eye Moody, Fred Weasley, Remus Lupin, and Nymphadora Tonks are among the most prominent characters who lose their lives in The Deathly Hallows. Although they pass on, the series shows that they’re not forgotten. Their families remember their sacrifice, name children after them, and mourn their passing for many years after. As godfather to Tonks and Lupin’s son, Harry ensures that their legacy lives on in the memories he shares with Teddy.
Albus Dumbledore & Severus Snape Became Portraits At Hogwarts
Character
Perished In
Severus Snape
Battle of Hogwarts by Nagini
Albus Dumbledore
Battle of the Astronomy Tower by Snape
Hogwarts loses two headmasters during Harry Potter — the famous wizard Albus Dumbledore and the former Head of Slytherin House, Severus Snape. Both remain in sentient portrait form at Hogwarts. In Snape’s case, this is at Harry’s insistence, as he acknowledges the role Snape played in the Second Wizarding War.
The portraits don’t serve as replacements for the people who are gone, but they are important. Albus’ portrait is a source of advice for Harry, particularly when it comes to parenting. Unfortunately, both Dumbledore and Snape receive insulting biographies from Rita Skeeter, titled The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore and Snape: Scoundrel or Saint?, respectively.
Dobby Died A Hero’s Death
Perished in
Malfoy Manor by Bellatrix Lestrange
Dobby’s entry into the Wizarding World in Chamber of Secrets was quite comical and a bit grating, but he soon evolved into one of the biggest allies that Harry Potter had. From the second installment of the series until the very end, Dobby protects Harry because he believes in him. It was in this pursuit that Dobby died in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I.
The house elf managed to rescue Harry, Hermione, Ron, Luna, and Ollivander with his quick thinking when he got a chandelier to crash on Bellatrix Lestrange, but as he apparated with the prisoners, Bellatrix managed to stab him in the heart. Even if Dobby didn’t make it till the end, his legacy remains.
Dolores Umbridge Paid For Her Crimes
Profession
Former Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic
No
If one character remains the most hated by Harry Potter fans, it is Dolores Umbridge. She was easily the most morally corrupt character in the franchise, despotically exercising control and power over Hogwarts, and then presiding over the hateful Muggle-Born Registration Commission. Dolores had no real moral compass and was a dark wizard wearing pink.
Accordingly, she got her punishment in the end, even if it was a bit late. After punishing countless muggle-borns and students during her tenure at both Hogwarts and the Ministry of Magic, Umbridge languished in Azkaban Prison for the rest of her days after the Second Wizarding War.
Bellatrix Lestrange Was Bested By A Worthy Opponent
The duel between Molly and Bellatrix is one of the most memorable in the Harry Potter series, but how does Molly win without using the killing curse?
Perished in
Battle of Hogwarts by Molly Weasley
Bellatrix Lestrange was as lethal as they come, and she took down many worthy wizards and elves while she stayed alive. Voldemort’s most loyal servant, Bellatrix, was not only evil, but also highly sadistic. She enjoyed torturing people, which included Hermione, the Longbottoms, Dobby, and many more. She was the one who caused the death of beloved Sirius.
In the end, Bellatrix messed with the wrong witch — Molly Weasley. She underestimates the matriarch of the Weasley family when she tries to target Ginny, but Molly takes her down with her superior dueling skills. Bellatrix was taken out rather quickly.
Ginny Weasley Became a Professional Sports Star
Profession

Professional Quidditch Player
Harry Potter
Harry’s wife, Ginny Weasley, is notable throughout Harry Potter for her prodigious Quidditch talent. She was Gryffindor’s Chaser and Keeper (when Harry was unavailable). In her post-Hogwarts years, she makes good use of this skill, becoming a professional Quidditch player for the Holyhead Harpies.
Even after retiring from the Harpies, Ginny doesn’t completely leave the field. She instead takes up a position as a Quidditch commentator. She eventually became the sports editor for the Daily Prophet newspaper. Ginny’s marriage to Harry is a happy one, and they remain in love decades into the future.
Neville Longbottom Chose His Passios
Profession
Married To
Professor Of Herbology
Hannah Abbott
Neville has one of Harry Potter‘s longest, most fascinating, and most transformative arcs. He goes from a shy and nervous boy to a brave man who takes out Lord Voldemort’s final Horcrux. The duality of Neville’s character is also emphasized by his post-Hogwarts life. Neville Longbottom becomes an Auror, following the example of his friends and of his parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom.
However, Neville later changes his career track, becoming a Herbology teacher at Hogwarts and, eventually, Head of Gryffindor House. He also marries Hufflepuff Hannah Abbott. While the two don’t have children, Neville is the godfather of Harry’s second son, Albus Severus.
Luna Lovegood Made Great Contributions To The Wizarding World
Profession
Married To
Magizoologist
Rolf Scamander
Luna Lovegood is a frequent target of bullying and ostracization at Hogwarts. However, her magical accomplishments in later life show that she’s more than just a quirky personality. She becomes a famous Magizoologist, discovering many magical creatures never before introduced to the Wizarding World.
Luna marries Rolf Scamander, the grandson of Newt Scamander, the protagonist of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. She and Rolf have twin sons, Lorcan and Lysander. Luna never finds the fabled Crumple-Horned Snorkack, but she makes many lasting contributions to the Wizarding World.

Draco marries Astoria Greengrass, and the two have a son named Scorpius Hyperion. Unfortunately, Astoria dies young from a blood malediction.
Even though Scorpius’ birth had a detrimental effect on Astoria’s health, Draco is a very loving father. He raises his son to be far more accepting than his younger self. As he preserves his wealth, Draco doesn’t need to work. He instead dedicates much of his time to the pursuit of alchemy.
Minerva McGonagall Continued Nurturing Students
Profession
Married to
Headmistress of Hogwarts
Widowed (Former Spouse: Elphinstone Urquart)
Minerva McGonagall is the Head of Gryffindor House and Deputy Headmistress during Harry’s time at Hogwarts. After Harry Potter, she remains one of the steadiest presences in the Wizarding World. She is awarded an Order of Merlin and takes over the post of Headmistress, eventually leaving the Gryffindors in the care of Neville.
Headmistress McGonagall keeps her position until the epilogue and is there to welcome the next generations at Hogwarts. Albus’ adventures and friendship with Scorpius in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child cause some friction between her and Harry. Nonetheless, Minerva remains respected by Harry and the world at large.
