Caitlin Clark may be the most prominent name in the WNBA right now, but even she recognizes the immense talent of JuJu Watkins. As the Indiana Fever rookie watched her former team, the Iowa Hawkeyes, face off against USC, she couldn’t help but admire Watkins’ skill and potential.
When asked about the rising USC star’s inevitable transition to the WNBA, Clark didn’t hold back her thoughts. “It’s scary to think about,” she admitted. The night was meant to celebrate Clark, as Iowa retired her iconic No. 22 jersey in front of a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena, but Watkins nearly stole the show.
Watkins Shines Against Iowa
The USC sophomore delivered an electrifying performance, scoring 27 points, including the Trojans’ last 10, in a hard-fought 76-69 loss to Iowa. Watkins’ dominance on the court was undeniable, proving why she is considered one of the brightest young stars in women’s college basketball.
Clark has long recognized Watkins’ talent, even offering words of encouragement in the past. “I had this attention for a year and a half, two years, and you’re going to have it for the next three,” she told Watkins previously, acknowledging the spotlight that follows elite players.
JuJu Watkins’ Talent Speaks for Itself
With each game, Watkins continues to establish herself as a force in college basketball, even surpassing some of Clark’s own records. After the matchup, Clark praised the young star’s relentless drive and skill.
“I’ve talked to JuJu a little bit. Obviously, I kind of watch from a distance. But honestly, more than anything, I just try to be supportive,” Clark shared. “She doesn’t need my help. She’s obviously really talented—her game speaks for itself.”
Watkins demonstrated her exceptional ability against Iowa, overcoming the challenges of a hostile crowd while consistently making clutch plays. Her ability to get to the free-throw line with ease further showcased her versatility and composure under pressure.
The Caitlin Clark Effect Remains Strong
While Watkins put up a stellar fight, Iowa ultimately secured the victory, ensuring that Clark’s special night remained one to remember. Watching from the stands, Clark recognized the momentum shifts throughout the game.
“As a player, there’s nothing better than seeing the ball go through the rim. It just gives you confidence,” she noted. “She got to the free-throw line. That’s huge.”
Despite Watkins’ impressive showing, Iowa proved resilient, earning a significant win in the post-Clark era. However, Clark made one thing clear—women’s basketball’s next superstar is already on the rise. If anyone thought she was the last of the new generation of greats, JuJu Watkins is here to prove them wrong. Even Clark herself admits it’s a future to be both excited for and a little afraid of.
