The Washington Commanders are suddenly one of the top destinations for NFL free agents and players seeking trades.
After the 2024 unprecedented run to the NFC Championship game, Washington has morphed from one of the teams at the bottom of the league to a legitimate contender, and it’s clear other team’s players want to play with Jayden Daniels and be part of the culture Dan Quinn is building.

Dallas Cowboys superstar Micah Parsons has raved about Quinn and Daniels publicly on multiple occasions. Recently, Cleveland Browns star pass rusher Myles Garrett said he’d love to play for the Washington Commanders after requesting a trade.
Right now, GM Adam Peters is working alongside Quinn with a plan to attack the offseason so Washington can keep the momentum riding in 2025. They have key decisions to make with players from their current roster, with veteran staples like Bobby Wagner, Jeremy Chinn and Zach Ertz all playing on one-year deals in 2024.
Washington will have to decide which players from the 2024 squad they want to keep around and say goodbye to those they don’t, which will be important as the Commanders try to keep the winning culture they built so quickly in tact.
While that process is playing out, the Commanders scouting department and talent evaluators will start to put a board together with their top free agent targets ranked, and the rough contract they will be willing to pay. It’s clear the two biggest needs for Washington are an elite WR opposite of Terry McLaurin. On the defensive side of the ball the Commanders need a game-wrecking pass rusher – and it’s safe to say the Washington brass is at least making a call to Cleveland about Garrett – even if the Browns say they aren’t trading Garrett.
Peters and his staff has to evaluate the upcoming draft class, the current roster and potential free agent targets to make informed decisions about how to keep the momentum from 2024 going, but there’s one position they are sure to upgrade.
Beyond Terry McLaurin, the Commanders didn’t have an elite WR as an alternate target for Daniels during his rookie campaign.
Bleacher Report believes the Commanders will turn to the Kansas City Chiefs to add a veteran big-bodied pass catcher.
BR believes Washington will sign DeAndre Hopkins to a one-year deal worth $4 million, which would give the Commanders room to add another WR in free agency or the draft:
DeAndre Hopkins is the most recognizable name among this group of free agents, but he’s also in the sunset of his career and doesn’t present the same value he once did to an offense.
At this juncture, Hopkins should be viewed as a mercenary hire as he chases a championship. The 12-year veteran, who turns 33 in June, is no longer counted among the league’s top wide receivers and doesn’t present the same type of physical presence he once did.
However, his experience and remaining skill set can provide a solid option within some offense that doesn’t require him to be a focal point. The Kansas City Chiefs require more explosive weapons beyond Xavier Worthy, so Hopkins should look elsewhere. Maybe he could reunite with his old head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, in the NFC East.
