Sturla Holm Laegreid has explained why he tearfully admitted to cheating on his girlfriend after winning a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics. The biathlete, representing Norway, secured third place in the 20km biathlon on Tuesday, with his fellow countryman Johan-Olav Botn clinching gold. Afterwards, an emotional Laegreid took everybody by surprise as he admitted to being unfaithful to his partner of six months.
Fighting through tears, he told Norwegian broadcaster NRK: “There is something I want to share with someone who may not be watching today. Half a year ago I met the love of my life, the world’s most beautiful and nicest person. Three months ago I made the mistake of my life and cheated on her, and I told her about that a week ago. This has been the worst week of my life.”
Laegreid continued: “I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her.
“You never know how many chances you get, and I don’t think I’ll get another chance at true love like I had with her, but I’m willing to do anything.
“I am willing to drop a nuclear bomb on NRK and commit social suicide and be hated by everyone. Because I am already hated by her, and I hope that maybe it can make her realise how much I love her.”
Later on, in his press conference, Laegreid was asked why he chose to confess his infidelity in front of the world.

“I don’t want to think I didn’t try everything to get her back,” he explained. “We make different choices during our lives and that’s how you make life, basically.
“Today, I made the choice to tell the world what I did, so maybe, maybe there is a chance she will see what she really means to me and maybe not.
“Again, I don’t want to steal the show today. I hope this is just like a day-or-two-long thing. I haven’t got any reactions from the girl I mentioned.
“I’m happy because maybe she hasn’t seen it. Maybe she will see it at the right time. I hope I don’t make anything worse for her.
But maybe it can help, I don’t know. I hope there is a happy ending in the end, so we will see what I will do.”
