Catlin Fox said she was on the phone with her husband when he crashed and died on I-25 near Mead on March 9.
JOHNSTOWN, Colo — For the nearly eight years Catlin and Skylar Fox were together, they were inseparable.
“I think we maybe only been apart like two days,” Catlin Fox said.
From the moment she met him, they were best friends. She said even a mullet didn’t deter her from settling down with him and becoming his girlfriend. They would go on to spend five years engaged before getting married in June 2025.
“He was my other half,” said Fox.
Since March 9, Fox hasn’t been whole. She lost Skylar in a crash that morning along Interstate 25 near Mead.
“We talk every morning that we both were working on our way to work,” Fox said. “And he was talking to me on his AirPod. Then all of a sudden, I heard him say, ‘Oh my god, Catlin! Catlin!,’ and then a lot of crashing sounds.”
Fox said she heard him take his final breaths before the phone went silent. He was 15 miles from their Johnstown home.
“I also called 911 and I checked his Life360 and I started to head to the accident,” Fox said.
The crash temporarily blocked southbound lanes. Fox said she got as close as she could until she jumped out of the car and ran to the incident site.
“When I got there, he was already in the road, covered with a blanket and I knew,” Fox said, wiping away tears.

In a press release, Colorado State Patrol said while traveling southbound on I-25 in the left lane, the driver of a white work van signaled and began moving from the left lane into the right lane. At the same time, the driver of a red Ford F350, who had been traveling behind the work van, attempted to pass on the right.
Preliminary reports said the Ford F350 ended up driving onto the shoulder of the roadway, and as the Ford merged from the shoulder back into the right lane, the front right corner of the work van clipped the Ford’s near left corner, CSP said.
Troopers said the truck spun out of control and hit the concrete barrier in the left lane then rolled over. CSP said the truck driver died on scene.
Fox said the driver was Skylar.
“He was one of a kind person,” Fox said. “He was a family man. He was a friend to many people. He just enjoyed being around people, family, being outdoors, jeeping, working in the garage. He was always there for anyone who ever knew anything. He loved to talk and stay busy and he was just the most amazing father that I’ve ever witnessed.”

The couple have a 22-month-old baby girl. Fox said every night, she’s reminded of Skylar’s absence.
“My husband has never once in her entire life missed a bedtime ever,” Fox said. “I was the one that missed a couple due to work, but he’s never missed one.”
She said Skylar’s mother, Heather, told her that her son always wanted to be a father.
“She looks and acts just like him,” Fox said with a small smile. “All he ever wanted was just for family to be together. We were planning on listing our house for sale next month, moving down to Arizona to be closer to his family. That’s all he ever wanted was just to be together with family and friends and be outdoors, in the Jeep, working on mechanics and stuff, raising his daughter.”

CSP’s Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the investigation and is asking for information from anyone who may have witnessed the crash or any driving behavior of either driver beforehand. CSP is also requesting any dash camera footage that may have captured the drivers’ behavior before or at the time of the crash.
Fox has the same asks. She said she feels like she’s without answers and justice for her husband.
“If anybody can come forward to test the driving behaviors of the white van prior during the accident, please, please come forward,” Fox said. “Not only because, to my knowledge, there has not been any legal tickets issued. Not only for that, but I have a lot of questions myself and I just would really like to know why I have to raise my daughter without a father.”
CSP said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
The Colorado Department of Transportation reported as of Dec. 29, 2025, data showed work zone crashes in Colorado caused 532 injuries. Additionally, there were nine work zone fatalities in 2025, marking a 73% decrease since last year.
The crash happened in the construction area along I-25 near Mead.
Fox said she’s been surrounded by friends and family since the incident. A GoFundMe for cremation expenses and house bills organized by a family friend has reached more than $38,000.
“His mother, she flew in that same day and has been staying with me to help with my daughter and I just can’t imagine what she’s going through because she has to be strong for me and my daughter, but she’s also grieving, and she’s been away from her husband and her other two sons,” Fox said.
Fox said she’s been able to see how many lives her husband truly touched. She said it’s clear she wasn’t the only one who loved him.
“I’ve never seen somebody have so much joy for life than him,” Fox said. “This world is just very empty without him.”
