ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – One person is dead after a fire in a Kenai motel Sunday morning, according to the City of Kenai Fire Department.

It said firefighters responded to the Uptown Motel just after 9 a.m.
“Upon arrival, firefighting teams observed smoke and flames on the first floor of the facility. The senior fire officer on scene established an aggressive interior attack to locate and extinguish the fire, while simultaneously searching for remaining occupants,” the fire department said.
“As the fire attack team entered the room of origin, the fire was quickly contained,” the department said.
Firefighters found someone unconscious in the room where the fire started, the fire department said.
“Firefighters removed the individual from the room through a window to personnel outside for immediate EMS care. Personnel transferred the individual to an ambulance. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and the individual is deceased. Law enforcement has notified next of kin,” according to the City of Kenai Fire Department.
The department said firefighters put out the fire in the area it started and prevented it from spreading to the rest of the building.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
