The behind-the-scenes teaser clip of Wednesday season 2 from Netflix’s 2024 Geeked Week gives a glimpse at Morticia Addams in a new costume that breaks a long-standing tradition for her character. Ever since the original comics themselves and the 1960s Addams Family sitcom, Morticia Addams has been noted as one of the most iconic horror characters of all time, in part due to her unique costumes and design. Subsequent adaptations of The Addams Family have continued the tradition of giving Morticia elegant black dresses, long black hair, and black makeup, with this style also being adopted by her daughter, Wednesday.

Wednesday Addams’ preference for the color black has often been an important character trait in Addams Family adaptations, with Wednesday taking this quality to the next level as Jenna Ortega’s iteration requires a black substitute for Nevermore Academy’s purple uniform. Both Wednesday and Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Morticia wore only black throughout season 1 to pay homage to their characters’ iconic styles from past franchise entries, but Wednesday season 2 is making some adjustments to the Addamses’ color palettes. Not only is Pugsley donning Nevermore’s purple jacket, but Morticia is seen wearing a dress that breaks away from her black-clad franchise history.
Morticia Addams Wears Red In Wednesday Season 2, Breaking Her Black Costume Tradition
Morticia Shockingly Wears A Color Besides Black In Wednesday Season 2

In Wednesday season 2’s behind-the-scenes teaser, Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Morticia Addams arrives at Nevermore Academy wearing a red dress. While the dress has a unique design that changes between a dark red and almost black color depending on the lighting, it’s still a departure from Morticia’s classic black dress costume. Only on extremely rare occasions did Carolyn Jones’ wear anything other than her iconic black dress in the 1960s Addams Family show, with Anjelica Huston’s Morticia from the 1990s movies similarly only being seen in black clothing.
Catherine Zeta-Jones’ red dress marks a big change for the matriarch of Wednesday’s Addams family tree, though this version of the character already seems to be less strict with her clothing colors. While Wednesday Addams obtained a black fencing outfit while joining the team at Nevermore, teenage Morticia Addams is seen wearing the standard white uniform in a photo of the fencing team while she was in school. However, if Morticia is finally being seen without a black outfit, it’s also possible that the titular character could abandon her “allergy” to color.
What Morticia Wearing Red Really Means In Wednesday Season 2
Morticia’s Red Dress May Have A Darker Hidden Meaning

If Morticia is going to wear any color other than black in Wednesday season 2, then red is a fitting choice. Since Morticia wears black the majority of the time, wearing red could be the color that she chooses to symbolize her mourning the death of Larissa Weems after Wednesday season 1’s ending. Red also symbolizes danger, so it’s possible that Morticia’s dress is a warning of more threats and perils that Wednesday and Pugsley will face at Nevermore in season 2.
Netflix has officially confirmed that Wednesday season 2 will be released in 2025.
Morticia’s last big scene involving the color red was when she cut a rose’s head off its stem at the grave of Garrett Gates, tossing the stem instead of the petals. Red thus already has an association with death for Morticia, and hints at more deaths to come at Nevermore. Of course, red is also a color symbolizing heat, passion, and romance, which are defining features of Morticia and Gomez Addams’ marriage. Therefore, Morticia’s dress could also be a potential hint at their passion culminating in the birth of Pubert Addams, who is still missing from Wednesday.
