Coughlan notes that she and her on-screen love Luke Newton wanted to make sure the scene was “beautiful, touching, romantic and sexy”

The pressure was on for Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton when it came to the infamous Bridgerton carriage scene.
In a clip shared by Netflix, the pair discuss the scene in which Colin Bridgerton (Newton) proclaims his love for Penelope Featherington (Coughlan) and the pair finally hook up in the back of the carriage.
“I love that moment ‘cause…,” Newton, 31, says and Coughlan, 37, adds, “Because he thinks he screwed it up.”
“And then she’s in control. He’s put himself out there,” he adds.
Newton notes the build up for the scene was “a lot” and Coughlan shares that the pair felt “big pressure” when filming the fan-favorite moment.
“The fans are horny little devils and they used to send us pictures of carriages constantly and carriages rocking,” she explains. “So, this has to be both beautiful, touching, romantic and sexy, which is a lot of things.”
The on-screen love interests further detail the importance of the scene for their characters.
“In her mind after the kiss, it’s just she’s messed it up completely and she’s like, ‘He will never fancy me. He doesn’t fancy me. It’s embarrassing. I’m gonna move on,’” she said of the pair’s first kiss in episode 2. “There’s no part of her when he gets in that carriage that thinks anything like this is gonna happen.”
“He’s putting himself out there and he could just be rejected and have to get out and walk home,” Newton shares and she jokingly adds, “This is your stop.”

Fans were also quick to notice in the carriage scene that Colin only uses two fingers to adjust the sleeve on Penelope’s dress after their intimate encounter.
Director Andrew Ahn weighed in on the fan frenzy and credited Newton with making that choice in the scene.
“I wish I could take credit for this incredible moment of… physical authenticity, but I did not give this piece of direction. It was all Luke Newton!” he wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) in response to a fan.

“I think there’s always been that underlying sort of question mark with these two characters,” he said. “And people have obviously wanted them to get to the point that we’re getting to now, so I guess it was always in the back of our minds.”
“You kind of play that in previous seasons and in previous scenes, but you can’t really prepare for stripping down naked in front of your friends,” he jokingly added.
Coughlan previously teased that things got heated during the steamy scenes between her and Newton. She shared that they broke a piece of furniture while filming a sex scene, and found the filming process “really funny.”
“We would be like, in between scenes, and they were like, ‘Do you wanna get up and put your clothes on?’ We’re like, ‘We’ll just chill here.’ Like, in under the blankets,” she recalled during an interview on SiriusXM Hits 1 in April. “But then we have the advantage of knowing each other for years.”
The first part of Bridgerton season 3 is streaming now on Netflix and part 2 drops on June 13.
