Former Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Drew Gooden has offered a thought-provoking point of view on the ongoing GOAT discussion. This debate often centers around three iconic players: Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James. While many fans and analysts passionately argue about who deserves to hold the coveted title, Gooden believes that James has distinctly carved out his own legacy, placing him in a unique category.

Gooden emphasized that “King James” has demonstrated an unbelievable ability to win at least one NBA championship with any team he plays for. For “Big Drizzle,” this rare achievement is particularly worth noting as it highlights a level of versatility and adaptability that is not prominent on the resumes of Jordan and Bryant.
“I think he’s already separated himself from Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in that sense of winning multiple championships outside of the same organization and different and different coaches and different teammates. I think he’s already accomplished that,” Gooden told Talk Basket in 2020.
LeBron didn’t care about who he was playing with in LA
Many hoops fans often point fingers at James, attributing to him the inception of what has come to be known in the NBA lore as “super teams.” They argue that Bron wields considerable influence in recruiting star players who can help him in his quest for NBA championships. While this claim may be valid, Gooden presents a different perspective regarding James’s move to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Gooden firmly believes that LeBron was not about assembling a super team when he joined the “Purple and Gold” in 2018. Instead, he was driven by a strong desire to demonstrate his ability to lead the team to yet another NBA championship run, regardless of the players on the roster and its coaching staff.
In 2020, James successfully spearheaded the Lakers to their 17th NBA title. For Gooden, it was a milestone proving Bron is in a completely different zone.
“I think this will be the tale of the tape, like, ‘Okay, I’ve not only done that two times but I’m gonna do that the third time in Los Angeles. Doesn’t matter who the coach is, doesn’t matter who my teammates are. I’m gonna provide the championship for the city of Los Angeles,'” the 14-year NBA veteran added.
Bron knew exactly when he became the greatest
Fans already had high expectations for James when he made his NBA debut. They anticipated that he would rise to superstardom right from the start. With an incredible display of natural talent, relentless dedication, and an unyielding work ethic, LeBron did not disappoint and quickly began to make a name for himself.
As the years went by, Bron’s skills only sharpened, and he consistently proved himself to be a dominant force in the big boys’ league. Inevitably, James was viewed as arguably the greatest player of all time. This discussion remains a hot topic in sports circles. However, LeBron himself has once boldly put an end to it by proclaiming himself as the GOAT.
In his view, he solidified his status as the greatest player of all time when he achieved the unthinkable and led the Cavs to their first-ever NBA Championship in 2016. Against all odds, “The King” orchestrated a historic comeback in the Finals to beat the Golden State Warriors, showcasing his unparalleled skill and ability to inspire and uplift his teammates in high-pressure situations.
“If we are talking from a basketball standpoint. At that moment (2016 Finals), I was like, ‘I’m the greatest basketball player that people have ever seen in all facets.’ I can play 1 through 5, I can guard 1 through 5, just like I literally did something that’s never been done in the history of the sport,” the four-time MVP once said. “Teams that go down 3-1 were like 0-32 in finals history. There’s nobody ever coming out of that. And nobody gave us a chance. That just felt like, ‘Ain’t nobody better than me at this.'”
LeBron continues to etch his own story
By exhibiting his talent across various franchises, LeBron has solidified his status as an extraordinary player. As the GOAT debate continues, James has already established an unparalleled legacy, setting him apart from his predecessors and even successors significantly.
What’s even more fascinating is the fact that James has yet to show any signs of slowing down at 40 years old. To his moment, he still constantly proves that he has not only met but has surpassed many expectations throughout his stellar career.
Bron continues to perform at an exceptionally high level, proudly defying the laws of time and physics with his incredible consistency. Stating the obvious, James, through his longevity and transcendence, exemplifies that he is neither Jordan nor Kobe but a generational athlete in a class of his own.
