After back-to-back seasons of love triangles, miscommunications, and outright deception, Emily in Paris finally has a promising plot to move forward with. Emily (Lily Collins) is trading in her tireless on-again, off-again relationship with Chef Gabriel for a whirlwind romance with Marcello, the rich Italian beau who whisked her off to Rome. She’s also taking on more responsibility at work as she prepares to open the Rome office for Agence Grateau — and she’s even bringing her best friend with her. It’s a win for everyone except for Gabriel and, apparently, French president Emmanuel Macron

“We will fight hard. And we will ask them to remain in Paris,” Macron told Varietyin a recent interview. “Emily in Paris in Rome doesn‘t make sense.” The president’s wife, Brigitte, made a cameo during an episode of the recently-released fourth season of Emily in Paris. “I was super proud, and she was very happy to do it. It’s just a few minutes, but I think it was a very good moment for her. I think it’s good for the image of France,” he added.

Macron joked that he’s “less attractive” than his wife, which has kept him from popping up on the popular Netflix series. But that hasn’t stopped him from plotting against Emily’s search for true love for his own gain. “Emily in Paris is super positive in terms of attractiveness for the country,” he said. “For my own business, it’s a very good initiative.”

Lucky for Macron, Emily’s move to Rome doesn’t mark a complete abandonment of France — but if the fact that her French has barely improved across four seasons is any indicator, she probably would be better off starting from scratch with Italian. When Emily in Paris was renewed for season five in September, creator Darren Star told Netflix TUDUM: “Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome. It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris, but she’s going to have a presence in Rome.”

While Macron holds it down for Team Gabriel, Collins herself is putting her money on Marcello. “Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance,” she told TUDUM. “We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time.”
