In the first two seasons of Bridgerton, Penelope Featherington’s awkward demeanor and bright and playful sense of style had placed her in the sidelines despite her role as the mysterious, influential gossip columnist of the ton. Avid watchers of the show have always known Penelope to be somewhat of a diamond in the rough; now that the spotlight is shining brightly on her this time, she finally gets a spoonful of freedom and a more mature look.
Prior to her lead role in Season 3, Penelope established herself as a shy and timid girl who often stood by the refreshments table at balls in observation of others. Though her unnoticeable character proved to be useful for her role as Lady Whistledown, her personality strayed from the stereotypes of the British elite, thus making her an outcast amongst the ladies of the marriage mart.
The youngest Featherington was always seen donning different variations of a floral dress in her family’s signature citrus colours. Though her gowns were intricate and well-embellished, the intensity of yellows found in her wardrobe often left her sticking out like a sore thumb rather than blending in with the trends of the era. Not that there’s anything wrong with dressing differently, but it scared eligible bachelors off without even trying. And we all know that in the Bridgerton universe, nothing is as devastating as being a single woman at the end of the season.
Wanting to appear more desirable to suitors so she could free herself from her family’s tight grip, Penelope deviates from her usual bright colour palette and instead opts for gowns in more sultry and sophisticated colour palettes and silhouettes. This means a more intentional emphasis on her decolletage and waist to show off her natural curves. While the somber complementary hues bring out the best of her fiery red hair and porcelain complexion.
She also starts to wear her hair down in soft curls that mimic the likes of 40s star Rita Hayworth to elicit more allure. Her makeup has also changed to highlight her cheekbones and mesmerising blue eyes; a sultry departure from the youthful beauty direction of earlier seasons.
Alongside her physical transformation, her outward demeanor has also shifted. Penelope is able to develop her confidence and charm, cementing her as this season’s understated catch. She embodies her butterfly symbol as she takes flight, finding comfort in her newfound maturity and grace whilst keeping her independent, witty, and entertaining nature.
The new season has definitely shown us a different side of Penelope Featherington we always knew she had. Her new wardrobe and confidence were merely tools to reflect her maturity and changed sense of self.
