Casias was last seen walking alone in New Mexico after dropping off her husband at work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, but not reporting for work herself.

“SHE WALKED OUT OF HER HOME… AND NEVER CAME BACK.”

Missing New Mexico lab employee Melissa Casias found d3-ad nearly a year later as disturbing new details deepen the mystery

A heartbreaking discovery has brought renewed grief — and even more questions — to a New Mexico family nearly a year after Melissa Casias vanished without a trace.

New Mexico State Police have confirmed that remains found in the McGaffey Ridge area of Carson National Forest have been positively identified as Casias, who disappeared in June 2025.

Melissa, 54, was last seen after what appeared to be a completely normal day.

According to investigators, she dropped off lunch for her daughter before unexpectedly disappearing.

When she failed to return home, loved ones immediately knew something was wrong.

But what investigators discovered afterward only deepened the mystery.

Her work phone and personal phone were reportedly left behind inside her home — both wiped clean after being factory reset.

Her identification was also abandoned.

Security footage later captured Melissa walking alone eastbound along State Road 518 near Ranchos de Taos.

That would be the last confirmed sighting of her alive.

Now, nearly 11 months later, a hiker has discovered her remains in a remote forest area approximately six miles from where she was last seen.

Police also confirmed that a handgun was found beside the body.

Authorities say Melissa’s cause of death has not yet been determined.

The case has drawn widespread attention not only because of the heartbreaking outcome — but because of the unusual circumstances surrounding Melissa’s disappearance.

Melissa worked as an administrative assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory, a historic research facility long connected to U.S. nuclear programs.

Her disappearance later became part of wider public discussion involving several other missing or deceased individuals with reported links to government, defense, or research facilities in New Mexico.

Investigators have not publicly connected those cases.

Still, the unusual details surrounding Melissa’s final known movements have continued to raise questions.

Authorities are currently examining the scene where her remains were found and tracing the origin of the handgun discovered nearby.

It remains unclear how long she had been in the forest before she was located.

For Melissa’s family, the discovery has brought devastating heartbreak — but not the closure they had hoped for.

And for many following the case, the most difficult questions remain unanswered:

Why were her phones wiped?

How did she end up miles away in a remote forest?

And what truly happened after she walked away from home that day?

For now, New Mexico investigators continue searching for those answers… while Melissa’s loved ones continue mourning a loss that remains wrapped in mystery.
