The Wales’ refuse to be dragged in to the Sussexes ‘drama’, but they may have no choice as Harry and Megan prepare to make this shock move

With mounting reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could be set to make their much-anticipated return to the UK this summer; speculation has now been swirling that Prince William and Kate Middleton may just beat them to it and head to the Sussexes home turf in the US instead.

King Charles is expected to visit the US over the next few weeks, with next month marking the anniversary of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence from Britain, ahead of the big 250th celebration of Independence Day taking place on July 4th.

However, it was widely reported that Kate played an instrumental role in the success of President Donald Trump’s visit to the UK in September, and it would come as no surprise if the Wales’ were to fly stateside independently of Charles and Camilla to commemorate the momentous occasion.

Meanwhile, the bitter rift between California-based Harry, 41, and William, 43, shows no signs of showing, and we’re told how Harry and Meghan Markle have now begun lining up public appearances and planning social media posts in a bid to stop the Wales’ from outshining them in their own backyard,

An insider says, ‘They always say they’re not looking to compete with William and Kate, but ever since they found out [about Kate and William’s trip to America] there’s been this frenzy on their team to line up appearances and various media placements that can run at the same time William and Kate are in town so they don’t dominate all the headlines.

‘There’s also a lot of pressure on the team to come up with the perfect video for Meghan to share to social media while William and Kate are in town. Meghan and Harry clearly aren’t going to sit back and let them take centre stage without a fight, so there’s certainly some drama ahead.’

Kate and William last visited the States together in 2022 when they both attended the awards ceremony for William’s eco-initiative, The Earthshot Prize. At the time they were greeted by cheers from crowds, making it clear that their popularity hadn’t waned despite their visit coming just a year after Harry and Meghan’s damning interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Then just a day after the Wales’ landed stateside, the trailer for the Sussexes’ Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, was released – all but dominating major headlines and overshadowing William’s passion project.

And the bombshell trailer wasn’t the first time Meghan and Harry have been accused of attempting to upstage the royals; previously releasing a couple’s portrait, in which Meghan opted to wear a striking red jumpsuit, just two days after The Royal Family released their own as a celebration of Charles’ Coronation in 2022.
However, with the Sussexes popularity continuing to take a downturn stateside, the source says Meghan, 44, is seeing the Wales’ visit as a ‘challenge’ against her personally.

‘Meghan in particular is said to be taking it very personally. She feels like William and Kate turning up in America right now is a direct challenge,’ we’re told.

‘She wants to make it known that they won’t be intimidated, certainly not on their own turf.’

William and Kate’s relationship with President Trump has also caused widespread debate, with a UK newspaper recently questioning whether William and Kate could ‘ help salvage the special relationship’ amidst growing political tensions.

Meanwhile, Trump has also famously mocked the Sussexes, calling himself ‘no fan’ of Meghan, before adding, ‘I think Harry is being led around by his nose’. So it comes as little surprise that we’re told the Wales’ relationship with Trump – which is believed to be completely diplomatic – feels like a ‘dig’ to Harry and Meghan.

The insider says, ‘From Harry and Meghan’s perspective, William’s chummy friendship with Trump, who’s a known adversary of theirs, feels like a deliberate dig.

‘They have been very targeted by Trump so it’s quite a slap in the face to see William and Kate building a relationship with him. The fact that they are coming to America after being invited by him is only feeding their anger over the trip.’

September marked three years since Harry and William were last reported to have ‘briefly’ spoken to one another at the funeral of their grandmother amidst the sad rift that has torn the Royal Family apart.

The two estranged brothers, who almost 30 years ago were a picture of unity as they walked side-by-side behind their mother’s coffin, were forced to be in the same room together for their uncle’s funeral in August 2024, but they reportedly barely looked at one another – confirming the devastating truth that they are now all but strangers.

However, with the family experiencing some of their darkest days to date following Charles and Kate’s cancer diagnosis in 2024 (Kate announced she was in remission last year), we have previously reported how the Princess of Wales, 44, saw their potential US trip as the perfect opportunity to meet with Harry and Meghan and make peace.

A source previously told us, ‘She keeps saying enough is enough and that these grudges need to be put aside and she sees this trip as the perfect opportunity for it. She knows there are wounds on all sides, but she cannot stand the thought of this going on for another year.’

But the source says that with the Royal Family now under immense strain, William is strongly against making nice with the Sussexes and still refuses to forgive Harry for the accusations he has levelled against the monarchy.

The insider says, ‘Of course, if Kate had her way they would use it as an opportunity to meet with them and mend fences, but that is simply never going to happen, not unless William has some sort of miraculous turnaround. He’s still vehemently opposed to showing Harry any sort of forgiveness.’

When it comes to fulfilling their royal duties, however, we’re told William and Kate are firmly on the same page and, if they are to visit the US, will be focusing on their schedule rather than being pulled into any drama.

‘William and Kate find it laughable that Harry and Meghan would have the audacity to feel some sort of ownership on America; the Royal Family has been visiting the United States for nearly a hundred years, to them it’s absurd,’ the source says.

‘This trip is tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, if they do go, they will be on official business as guests of President Trump and William and Kate are refusing to get drawn into the drama.

‘It’s not something he’s all that concerned with, if anything he finds it amusing. It won’t impact his plans at all though; he and Kate will be focused on official events, the way they are on every royal tour.’
