What is it about?
For those unfamiliar with it, The Diplomat is an American political thriller created by Debora Cahn. It initially premiered on Netflix in 2023, and features Keri Russell as a seasoned US diplomat who is abruptly appointed as the ambassador to the United Kingdom amid an unfolding international crisis.
The narrative follows Kate Wyler, the newly appointed US ambassador to the United Kingdom. She must navigate helping to defuse an international emergency and forge strategic alliances, whilst simultaneously adjusting to her new high-profile position.

Additionally, she must contend with her deteriorating marriage to fellow career diplomat Hal Wyler. Since its debut, the programme has garnered significant acclaim.
The Diplomat has received critical praise for its writing, pacing and performances. Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell and (from season 2 onwards) Allison Janney have been particularly commended for their portrayals. At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2025, the programme received a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. Furthermore, Russell has previously secured an Actor Award and has also garnered nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards.
