King Charles III Cracks Jokes and Wins Over Congress - The New York Times

King Charles III has hailed an “unbreakable” bond between the United States and the United Kingdom in a speech to US Congress.

The King’s visit marks the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.

“For all of that time, our destinies as nations have been interlinked,” he said.

“We meet in times of great uncertainty, in times of conflict from Europe to the Middle East, which pose immense challenges for the international community, and whose impact is felt in communities the length and breadth of our own countries.

“We meet, too, in the aftermath of the incident not far from this great building, that sought to harm the leadership of your great nation, and to ferment wider fear and discord.

“Let me say, with unshakeable resolve, such acts of violence will never succeed.

“Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy, to protect all our people from harm

“It is hard not to feel the weight of history on my shoulders.”

The monarch addressed the four-century long relationship between the US and the UK, and said he “cannot help but think of my late-mother, Queen Elizabeth.”

King Charles also addressed Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“Unyielding resolve is needed for the defence of Ukraine and her most courageous people – in order to secure a truly just and lasting peace,” he said.

He referenced the UK AUKUS submarine programme “in partnership with Australia, a country of which I am also immensely proud to serve as Sovereign.”
