The 70-year-old Gardeners’ World favourite, who usually welcomes viewers into his beloved Longmeadow garden in Herefordshire, is stepping away from home soil for an ambitious new BBC Two project.
The upcoming programme will follow Monty as he journeys along one of Europe’s most iconic rivers — the Rhine — exploring gardens steeped in history and culture across four different countries.
Last week, Monty dropped the first real hint to his 1.3 million Instagram followers, posting a behind-the-scenes photo from a recording studio as he worked on the show’s commentary.
Alongside the image, he wrote:
“In the studio today continuing recording commentary for my new series ‘Monty Don’s Rhineland Gardens’ which will begin on BBC2 at 8pm on Friday January 16.”
According to the BBC, the series will take viewers on a scenic journey along the Rhine, uncovering the rich heritage, landscapes and stories behind the gardens that line its banks — promising a mix of travel, history and horticulture in classic Monty style.
