The Princess of Wales said that an exhibit of German Meissen porcelain was âbeautifulâ as she examined the display with Prince William, following a private lunch with the German President and his wife.
The King and Queen took their German guests to the Green Drawing Room to see a special collection of items from the Royal Collection linked to Germany.
The Prince of Wales, with the Princess of Wales, who was wearing a black Burberry dress with a pearl necklace, also joined them, as did the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
William and Kate stayed by each other’s side throughout as they viewed the five different tables of artefacts from the Royal Collection.
President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife were also shown a Christmas Eve entry in Queen Victoria’s diary from 1850 in which she described how her children were delighted with their Christmas tree. Victoria and Albert were responsible for popularising the German tradition of Christmas trees in Britain.
The guests also saw a photograph of Victoria’s own tree and presents from 1857.

Chaos erupts after horse out of control during state visit in front of King Charles
One of the horses during todayâs march past in Windsor for the German Presidentâs official welcome to the UK appeared to be out of control following the King and Mr Steinmeierâs inspection of the Guard of Honour.
Just as the Life Guards, a unit in the Household Cavalry, were starting to march in the Quadrangle of Windsor Castle, one of the horses appeared to be giving its rider a difficult time as they began the route.
The horse kept getting out of the queue and jumping back and forth before settling down and continuing with the march past.
