Alan Titchmarsh, the beloved TV gardener, has revealed that he’s selling his stunning £4 million Georgian home, citing concerns that he may no longer be able to maintain its sprawling four-acre garden. The 76-year-old star of Gardeners’ World explained that after 23 years of tending to the vast grounds, it’s time for a change. But the decision comes at a time when major new housing plans have been proposed just yards from his property. Is this a coincidence or is the new housing development influencing his decision?

The picturesque village of Holybourne, Hampshire, is set to undergo significant changes if developers get approval for their ambitious plans to build 160 homes on 15.6 hectares of land just behind Titchmarsh’s home. While Titchmarsh insists that the housing development had no influence on his decision to downsize, fellow villagers are not as convinced. The proposed development has sparked outrage, with many locals worried about the potential impact on traffic, green space, and the village’s rural charm.

Titchmarsh, who has lived in the Grade II-listed manor with his wife, Alison, for over two decades, insists his move is entirely personal. He cited a desire to live closer to his daughters and grandchildren, and to manage a smaller garden that better suits his needs. However, residents have raised concerns about the development’s effect on the village and its infrastructure.

The development plans, currently under consideration by East Hampshire District Council, are facing strong opposition from locals who fear the transformation of their quiet village into a suburban area. With traffic expected to increase and green spaces being replaced by homes, many feel that this development is disproportionate to the size of the village.

Despite these concerns, Titchmarsh remains optimistic. He said, “The village will remain a delightful place to live, with or without additional housing, which will not impinge on the enjoyment or convenience of where we live at present.” He also clarified that his decision to sell was purely about downsizing, adding, “The proposed development has nothing to do with our decision to move.”

The controversy continues to unfold as villagers wait for the final decision on the housing application, which is expected in the new year.
