A 13-year-old girl has tragically died after being pulled from a river in North Yorkshire, in an incident that has added to growing concern over water safety during the recent UK heatwave.

Emergency crews were called to the River Wharfe near Burnsall on Sunday evening after reports that a girl had gone missing in the water.

According to police, she was recovered after a short search and taken by air ambulance to hospital — but despite efforts by emergency responders and members of the public at the scene, she later died.

Her death comes amid a sharp rise in water-related incidents during the recent spell of unusually hot weather across the UK.

Authorities say the warm temperatures drew large crowds to rivers, lakes and beaches as people tried to cool off — but the number of serious incidents has risen rapidly in recent days.

Reports indicate at least 15 water-related deaths have been recorded during the heatwave, with incidents reported across England and Wales.

North Yorkshire Police thanked members of the public who assisted during the rescue effort.

Local MP Julian Smith also shared condolences, saying his thoughts were with the girl’s family after what he described as “horrific and devastating news.”

Renewed warnings over open water dangers

Safety organizations continue warning that rivers and open water can remain dangerous even during warm weather.

Experts say cold-water shock, hidden currents, sudden drops in depth, and poor underwater visibility can quickly turn a day out into an emergency — even in places that appear calm from the surface.

The tragedy has prompted renewed calls for caution around open-water swimming areas as summer approaches.

For the local community in Burnsall, what should have been a warm evening by the river has now become a heartbreaking loss no family could ever be prepared for.
