Adam Henson has opened up about the heart-wrenching moment he realised how close he “had been to losing” his wife, Charlie, after her cancer surgery.

Charlie, the wife of the Countryfile star, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021. She disclosed to the Telegraph that the doctor had described her condition as “very serious” and associated with a low survival rate.

Despite the shocking news, Charlie chose not to immediately inform her husband who was away for work, questioning “what could he do?” However, her mother and her partner, Pete, came over after receiving a call from the doctor.

In his 2023 book, ‘Christmas on the Farm’, Adam candidly discussed his wife’s cancer journey and how a 1920s-themed birthday party led to a heartbreaking epiphany.

Adam penned: “Two or three months after the op, we were invited to a birthday party with a 1920s theme. I was waiting for Charlie downstairs, and she walked into the kitchen dressed up ready to go.”

“She looked so beautiful. It really hit me how close I had been to losing her. Recovery is ongoing, and we live from one six-monthly scan to the next.”

He further revealed that Charlie must take a “handful” of Creon capsules at every meal, along with blood thinners due to her blood being “routed through smaller veins”.

Adam shared that once Charlie was back home, they “made a point” of spending quality time together, including travelling. The couple later joined his daughter, Ella, and her boyfriend, Sam, in Japan.

The beloved farmer confessed that their ordeal has reshaped “everything in life”, while underscoring the vital role of friends and family, extending heartfelt thanks for this unwavering pillar of support.

Adam said: “Our experience means we both want to make the absolute most of life, say yes to things and make time for what’s important. It’s such a cliche, but nothing is as important as your health.”

It was revealed back in May that Charlie, initially uninterested in the idea of marriage, experienced a profound change of heart after learning about the tumour.

She told the Telegraph that she wanted everyone to know that she loved Adam, and a wedding quickly became really important to her.

You can next catch Countryfile on BBC One on Sunday, October 20th, from 6.20pm.
