Pop legend and beloved TV favourite Martin Kemp has been rushed to hospital following a shocking chainsaw accident at his Hertfordshire home â an incident that his son Roman Kemp said looked âlike something straight out of a horror movie.â
The 63-year-old Spandau Ballet star â adored for his charm, wit, and effortless cool â was reportedly doing some weekend DIY when things took a terrifying turn. According to Roman, his father burst into the kitchen âcovered in blood and screaming for helpâ before being rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. âYep, Chainsaw.â â The Text That Sent His Family Into Panic
Speaking on his You About? podcast with Tom Grennan, Roman recalled the exact moment he discovered what had happened.
âFriday night, Iâd just finished work,â Roman explained. âThen Dad sends this photo to our family WhatsApp group â his handâs completely bandaged, thereâs blood everywhere â and all he writes underneath is:Â âYep, chainsaw.ââ
Tomâs reaction said it all.
âMate, that looks like a horror film! What the hell happened to your dadâs fingers?!â he gasped.
At first, Roman thought his dad was joking. But as he zoomed in on the photo, the truth hit him.
âAll his fingers were strapped together. It didnât even look like a hand anymore â it looked like a claw. I just messaged back:Â âWHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!ââ
đ©žÂ âWHY ARE YOU HANDLING A CHAINSAW?!â
As panic set in, both Roman and his sister Harley Moon began frantically messaging their dad â but got no reply.
âWe were like, âDad?! Are you okay?! Answer us!ââ Roman said. âNothing. Silence. So I called him â and when he finally picked up, he sounded way too calm.â
According to Roman, Martin brushed it off at first.
âHe goes, âOh yeah, not too bad, son. Just a little nick.â And Iâm like, âA nick? Youâre nearly 70 â what are you doing holding a chainsaw?!ââ
Thatâs when Martin finally revealed what happened:
âHe said, âThere was a branch I wanted to cut down. I grabbed the chainsaw â from the wrong end â the blade didnât have the guard on, and it just kicked in.ââ
Roman said he was speechless.
âHe literally picked up a live chainsaw by the blade! Heâs lucky he didnât lose his whole hand. Itâs insane.â
đ„ âBLOOD EVERYWHEREâ â THE DASH TO HOSPITAL
Roman revealed that Martinâs wife Shirlie was the first to see the aftermath.
âHe said there was blood pouring everywhere â all over the floor, over Mumâs kitchen towels. Mum was screaming, trying to wrap his hand. It was chaos.â
Paramedics were called, and Martin was rushed to hospital where doctors gave him a tetanus shot and stitched multiple deep cuts.
A family friend later confirmed he was âextremely lucky not to have severed tendons.â
Tom Grennan summed up what everyone was thinking:
âHeâs so, so lucky. I know people whoâve lost fingers from the same thing.â
đ FANS FLOOD SOCIAL MEDIA WITH MESSAGES
After Roman shared the story, fans poured onto social media with shock and relief.
âGet well soon, legend â no more power tools!â one fan wrote.
âThat sounds like a slasher movie, not a Saturday project!â joked another.
Many called Martin a âtrue rock starâ for his resilience â though some said the story gave them âactual chills.â
Martin himself has yet to make a public statement, but insiders say heâs now recovering at home and âalready cracking jokes about it.â
đ€Â FROM ROCK ICON TO DIY DISASTER
Martin Kempâs fans know him as the glamorous bassist of Spandau Ballet and the unforgettable Steve Owen from EastEnders â but away from fame, heâs a self-confessed DIY enthusiast.
Unfortunately, this latest mishap may have cured him of that hobby for good.
Roman couldnât resist teasing his dad on air:
âHeâs out here acting like heâs in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre! I told him, âDad, youâre a pop icon â call a gardener, not a paramedic next time!ââ
â€ïžÂ âTHATâS MY DAD FOR YOUâ
Despite the scare, the Kemp familyâs trademark humour shone through.
âThatâs my dad for you,â Roman said with a laugh. âA national treasure who somehow turns a near-death DIY fail into a family panic and a podcast story in one go.â
Fans echoed the sentiment online, calling Martin âa miracle man with nine lives.â
âYouâve already given us enough heart-stopping moments on stage, Martin,â one fan commented. âNo need to add chainsaws to the list.â đȘđ
