Precious Johnson, 24, was shot several times around 9:30p.m. at the Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
Johnson had just welcomed her first child with 19-year-old Kynath Terry Jr., according to WVTM13.
The Homewood Police Department said they found a male and female deceased from gunshot wounds when they arrived on scene.
Police said they believe the incident is “an apparent murder-suicide and is domestic in nature.”
Mother says she had no idea her son could become violent
Terry’s mother told WVTM13 she couldn’t understand why this incident happened.
His mother revealed the couple were having marital problems.
She added that Johnson did not want her husband’s family at the hospital when she delivered her baby, but his mother told WVTM13 she had no idea her son could become violent.
Terry married Johnson soon after finishing Army National Guard training, according to his mother.
Danne Howard, president of the Alabama Hospital Association, told the outlet that she had never seen something like this in her 30-year career.
“I think it’s sad, but this was an isolated incident, and I will say in my 30 years of working at the hospital association and representing our hospitals in the state, this is the first time something has occurred like this,” Howard said.
Security protocol?
Howard said there is a chance that there could be security protocol changes in Alabama hospitals, including at Baptist Health Brookwood, following the apparent murder-suicide.
Howard confirmed there are no security mandates for hospitals in Alabama, but that could change in the future.
“The hospitals always do an after-action report and look at what are the lessons learned, what worked well, what might need to be refined,” she explained.
“And in doing that, it’s not uncommon for the hospital association to pull together, all of our hospitals to share information and best practices and what worked and what didn’t work and what might need to be revisited.”
Homewood Mayor Jennifer Andress said the investigation remains ongoing.
“Our thoughts are with the victim, her family, the hospital staff, and everyone impacted,” she said.
“We are working closely with hospital leadership and will provide updates as appropriate.”
