Prince William shares sweet never-before-seen photo of him and Diana to mark Mother’s Day
The throwback photograph shows Diana with a young Prince William in a field of flowers.
Prince William has marked Mother’s Day by sharing a never-before-seen photograph of himself with his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and said he remembers her “today and every day”. The picture, from the Royal Family’s private collection, shows Diana with her eldest son in a field of flowers, taken at the family’s main home at Highgrove, Gloucestershire, in 1984.
In a message to go alongside the snap, he said: “Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day. W” Diana, who died aged 36 following a road accident in Paris on August 31, 1997, would have turned 65 on July 1 this year.
Released on Kensington Palace’s official social media pages on Sunday morning, the picture shows a two-year-old William surrounded by bright flowers. Wearing a white striped top and bright red trousers, the young prince is seen gazing at the blooms.
Diana, sitting cross-legged beside him, is wearing a bright pink jumper and jeans and is smiling at the camera.
Buckingham Palace also released three archive photos to mark Mother’s Day.
One black-and-white image shows a young Queen Elizabeth who appears to be arriving at Westminster Abbey, flanked by her mother, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Both women are clutching their wide-brimmed hats to keep them from blowing away in the wind.
The second family photo shows Queen Elizabeth sitting on a garden bench at Balmoral, Scotland, in 1953, with her two eldest children, Charles and Anne. The trio are joined by the Queen’s corgi, Sue, in the background.
Charles’s younger siblings, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Prince Edward, had not yet been born.
A final snap shows a grinning Queen Camilla with her late mother, Rosalind Shand.
The three images were accompanied by the message: “Wishing Mothers everywhere, and those who might be missing their Mums today, a restful Mothering Sunday.”
It has become customary for the Royal Family to release photographs marking key events such as Mother’s Day.
In recent years, William and Catherine have marked it by releasing personal photographs, usually of the princess with their three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven.
However, last year, the special day was marked with a short video celebrating the power of Mother Nature. It reflected how important nature was for the princess during her cancer treatment and recovery.
The decision not to release any photographs of Catherine and the children followed the furore over the 2025 Mother’s Day image, which picture agencies pulled over concerns it had been digitally manipulated.
The princess issued an apology the following day, admitting she had edited the photo.
