Why Pat Riley’s Jimmy Butler trade tops Nico Harrison’s Mavs blunder

Theo Pinson, former NBA player turned podcast host, isn’t holding back when it comes to the Miami Heat‘s decision to trade Jimmy Butler. On the March 18 episode of his To The Baha podcast, Pinson dropped a fiery take, arguing that Heat president Pat Riley made a bigger blunder than Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison did with Luka Doncic‘s trade to the Lakers.
“That is a worse trade than Dallas and the Lakers, by far… Jimmy Butler was Heat culture. Regardless of what the f*** you thought he was doing off the court, that motherf***** brought a toughness. He brought a mentality. He had leadership,” Pinson said, per NBACentral on X.

Pinson’s point hinges on Butler’s outsized impact in Miami. Since joining the Heat in 2019, Butler led them to two NBA Finals (2020 and 2023) and an Eastern Conference Finals run in 2022, proving he could turn any playoff seed into a nightmare for opponents.
“Bro, I swear to God, it did not matter what seed the Miami Heat were-if they got in the playoffs, any team that played them didn’t want to see him and had to buckle the f*** up,” Pinson added, emphasizing Butler’s grit. That’s high praise for a guy who averaged 17.6 points on 54.7% shooting this season before heading to the Golden State Warriors.

Meanwhile, Nico Harrison‘s trade of Doncic for Anthony Davis shocked the league, but Pinson sees it differently. Dallas has been hammered by injuries, sitting at a grim 8-26, while Miami’s 11-19 record post-Butler trade shows a team still healthy but missing its soul.
Butler’s 14-2 start with the Warriors only twists the knife for Heat fans, who’ve watched new addition Andrew Wiggins struggle to fill those shoes. Pinson’s rant suggests Pat Riley let go of the guy who defined “Heat Culture”-a term synonymous with toughness and tenacity.
