Dark Winds continues to stand out for its masterful use of cliffhangers, and last week’s episode delivered one of its most intense endings yet. Joe Leaphorn was conducting surveillance at a party where Jim Chee was working undercover, trying to locate Leroy—the cousin of a missing teenager named Billie, whom the Navajo Tribal Police have been protecting throughout the season. During the stakeout, Joe noticed suspicious activity in a nearby warehouse. When he went to investigate, he was suddenly attacked by two men and knocked unconscious, leaving his fate uncertain as the episode ended.

At the beginning of episode five, however, viewers learn that Joe survives the attack. The men who assaulted him turn out to be FBI agents conducting their own covert operation. Chee is already familiar with them from past collaborations. After roughly interrogating Joe—and even kicking him to jog his memory—the agents confirm that he is indeed a police officer and eventually release him. Injured but determined, Joe heads straight to a hospital, where he encounters his estranged wife, Emma, who treats his wounds.
This moment highlights another strength of the series: its ability to balance high-stakes police drama with deeply emotional character development. Emma had been largely absent from the first half of the season after leaving Joe at the end of season three and moving to Los Angeles. Her return emphasizes the emotional distance between them. The silence created by her absence is significant, reflecting the emptiness in Joe’s life without her. Their relationship has been strained not only by physical separation but also by unresolved grief following the death of their son, Joe Jr., and by Emma’s difficult decision to lie during a previous FBI investigation.
Emma’s move to Los Angeles was necessary for her own healing and sense of purpose. Now back at work in a clinic, she finds fulfillment in serving her community, particularly helping women, children, and the elderly. Her work brings her stability and a renewed sense of identity. When Joe reenters her life, he disrupts that fragile balance. Although they share a brief lunch in a previous episode, their emotional distance remains clear. When Joe visits Emma again for treatment, she advises him to get an X-ray due to his injuries. True to his stubborn nature, he initially refuses, insisting on returning to work as quickly as possible. Emma recognizes this pattern in him—his tendency to ignore his own well-being in pursuit of duty. While she tries to remain professional and composed, her concern is evident. She treats him as she would any patient but struggles internally because he is still her husband. Ultimately, Joe notices her disapproval and agrees to follow her medical advice, showing a small but meaningful moment of growth.

After receiving treatment, Joe reunites with Chee and Bernadette to visit the FBI office. There, they discover that their investigation into Billie’s situation may be connected to a larger federal case involving illegal import and export operations. Despite this overlap, the FBI agents refuse to collaborate, leaving the tribal police to continue their work independently.
Determined to pursue their only lead, Chee goes undercover again to track Sonny, a recruiter tied to the illegal operation who claims to know Leroy. While working with Sonny, Chee narrowly avoids exposure when an elderly woman recognizes him and speaks to him in Navajo, recalling a moment from his past. Fortunately, Sonny does not understand the language, allowing Chee to dismiss the situation without raising suspicion.
The two later visit a strip club, where Sonny conducts business in a back room. While waiting, Chee reflects on a recent argument with Bernadette, who had withheld information about Joe’s possible retirement. In an unexpected conversation with a sex worker, Chee begins to understand that Bernadette may have been trying to protect him rather than deceive him. This moment of insight adds depth to his emotional journey.
The tension escalates quickly when Sonny suddenly runs out of the back room, pursued by a gunman who opens fire. Sonny is wounded, but the two manage to escape and return to his apartment. After treating Sonny’s injury, Chee takes advantage of the situation to search for clues. He finds an address linked to Leroy and follows it, only to discover the apartment is empty.
Inside, Chee experiences another episode of what is referred to as “ghost sickness,” a condition tied to Navajo beliefs and also symbolic of his unresolved trauma. His physical wounds begin to reopen, and he hears disturbing sounds coming from another room. There, he discovers a figure lying under a blanket, creating a chilling and ambiguous moment that blurs the line between reality and hallucination.

Chee’s ghost sickness reflects his deeper emotional struggles, including the loss of his mother and feelings of inadequacy after being passed over for a promotion. The series uses this condition to explore both psychological trauma and cultural perspectives, portraying how emotional wounds can manifest in physical and spiritual ways.
The episode ends on yet another suspenseful cliffhanger. As Chee is caught in this unsettling moment, Sonny regains consciousness and points a gun at him, demanding to know his true identity. Once again, viewers are left in suspense, waiting to see how Chee will escape this dangerous situation.
