A man and woman have been forced to leap from an apartment building window after a suspected e-bike fire, with sad scenes at the premises later in the day.

A man and woman have been forced to jump from the window of a Sydney unit after becoming trapped by a suspected e-bike fire, with police seen carrying a dog from the premises in sad scenes hours later.
Multiple triple-0 calls were made just after 6.30 on Thursday morning after a fierce blaze broke out on the first floor of the building on Cumberland Road in Auburn.
Neighbours reported a series of explosions, and firefighters arrived to a large pall of smoke and flames pouring out of the first floor.
“At the height of the fire, a man and woman jumped from a first floor balcony to escape the flames,” a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said.

The pair were seriously injured and taken to hospital.
“The fire was in their apartment, everything inside has been completely destroyed by fire,” Inspector Duty Commander Kevin Smith told NewsWire.
“It would have been very, very hot, and very, very smoky, and that’s why they’ve jumped from the balcony.”
The building was evacuated by emergency services, and a 93-year-old occupant of another apartment was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.
Investigators believe a charging e-bike may have caused the fire, which has caused extensive damage to the unit block.
Mr Smith said the e-bike was not in the apartment at the time, but its battery had been charging inside when the fire broke out.
Pictures from the scene showed police carrying out a small white dog wrapped in a tattered blanket.
A panel of glass fencing on the balcony had blown out, as had the window of a room that otherwise appears completely burned.

Officers were seen loading what appears to be an orange e-bike into a police van.
“FRNSW urges the public to take extra care when charging lithium-ion batteries, used to power e-bikes and other devices,” a spokesman said.
“Never charge e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries near exits and don’t overcharge them or use batteries that are damaged or compromised.”
Localised traffic diversions are in place and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
