Details of the Duchess of Kent’s funeral plans have been revealed, with Buckingham Palace confirming the service will take place at Westminster Cathedral on Tuesday, 16th September at 2pm. Ahead of the funeral, the Duchess of Kent’s coffin will rest in the private chapel at Kensington Palace.

The Duchess of Kent’s death was announced by Buckingham Palace on Friday, with the King, Queen, Prince and Princess of Wales and Prince Harry paying tribute to Katharine in the hours that followed. She is survived by her husband Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and their three children, George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews; Lady Helen Taylor; and Lord Nicholas Windsor, alongside ten grandchildren (including Lady Amelia Windsor).Prince Edward Duke of Kent and Katharine Duchess of Kent leave St Paul's Cathedral after a national service of...

Katharine’s coffin will be taken by hearse to Westminster Cathedral on Monday, 15th September, where the Rite of Reception and Vespers will take place, on the eve of the Requiem Mass. This service will be attended by the Duchess’s immediate family only. Thereafter, it will rest overnight in the Lady Chapel. On the afternoon of Tuesday, 16th September, Their Majesties The King and Queen and Members of the Royal Family will join The Duke of Kent and members of The Duchess’s family at the Requiem Mass for The Duchess of Kent.

Afterwards, the coffin will be taken by hearse to the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, Windsor. The funeral plans marks the first Royal funeral at Westminster Cathedral since its construction in 1903. It will mark the first Royal Catholic funeral in modern history.

Details of which members of the royal family will attend are due to be shared in the coming days, but it is thought the King, as well as the Queen, Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will attend. It’s also likely extended members of the family would attend – including non-working royals. Questions remain over the attendance of the Duke of Sussex, who is currently in the UK to attend the Wellchild awards in London, and Prince Andrew.

Bishop James Curry, Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster and Titular Bishop of Ramsbury, will celebrate the Rite of Reception and Vespers on the afternoon before the Requiem Mass. The Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster will celebrate the Requiem Mass itself. In addition to the Cathedral Clergy, the Dean of Windsor will participate in the Mass before accompanying the coffin to Frogmore.
