George’s next step in his education was revealed by the Wales family this afternoon

There are three key reasons behind the Prince and Princess of Wales’s decision to send Prince George to Eton, a royal commentator has claimed.

Kensington Palace announced this afternoon that George will be attending Eton College in September, ending the speculation surrounding the 12-year-old.

The decision means that George, who will be 13 by the time he starts at the esteemed college, will attend one of the most famous schools in the county – the same institution both his father, the Prince of Wales, and his uncle, Prince Harry, enrolled at.

There had been discussions with Marlborough College in Wiltshire, the alma mater of the Princess of Wales.

Firstly, he noted, is the proximity. The college is located just the other side of the River Thames to Windsor, meaning it is practical and convenient.

“Although he will be boarding,” Mr Fitzwilliam concedes, “their home of Forest Lodge is nearby.”

Another “highly significant” factor, according to the commentator, is the security.

With both Harry and William attending the college during their youths, the institution is well accustomed to the security needs of high-profile individuals and royals.

Finally, Mr Fitzwilliams cited the “excellent sporting facilities” that would have undoubtedly played a role in the decision.

The college boasts multi-million-pound sports facilities, such as the Eton Sports and Aquatics Centre.

Harry previously admitted to Time that, during his time at Eton, “If it wasn’t for the sports field and the amount of sports that were on offer, there’s no way I would have stayed in school.”

Their sports programme, which offers rugby, football, hockey, cricket, rowing, athletics, and traditional games like the Wall Game, Field Game, and Eton Fives.

Students can also participate in tennis, squash, rackets, badminton, swimming, water polo, sailing, fencing, judo, kickboxing, kung fu, climbing, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, trampolining, cycling, and golf.

Mr Fitzwilliams continued: “There will be those who see it as elitist, which it is and this makes it perfect in the way it prepares pupils for leadership having educated twenty prime ministers.

“He is our future King and must be as well prepared as possible.

“Also their policy on smartphones appeals to the strict rules of privacy which he needs.”

Eton College, founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, has long been associated with Britain’s elite – William and Catherine’s decision today continues a historic trend, for a myriad of reasons.
