Royal fans have gushed over the cheeky nickname Prince Philip had for his wife, Queen Elizabeth ll, after it circulated on social media.

Today marks the anniversary of her late Majesty’s death, as it is three years since the King’s mother passed away on September 8, 2022, aged 96, at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

And as the Royal Family pays tribute to the revered monarch, fans of the late Queen are walking down memory lane to unearth a unique name the late Duke affectionately held for his wife – and it’s certainly unexpected.

Queen Elizabeth and the former Duke of Edinburgh enjoyed 73 years of marriage together before he passed away on April 9, 2021. He was 99.

Many have since taken to Reddit to share their disbelief over the ‘cheeky’ one word moniker the Prince lovingly called his wife throughout their lifetime.

‘Today I learned that Prince Philip’s ‘affectionate’ nickname for Queen Elizabeth was ‘cabbage’, wrote a user in the ‘Today I Learned’ Reddit thread.

British historian and biographer Robert Lacey confirmed that the Prince did indeed use the sweet moniker for his wife. Speaking to The Sunday Times in 2006, he said ‘Yes, I’ve heard that is how he will sometimes refer to her’.

In its literal translation, it means ‘my little cabbage’ but the French idiom is a way of saying ‘my darling’.

Providing more context on the sweet name, one user wrote: ‘Mon petit chou’ (my little cabbage) is a common term of endearment in French. Both Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth are fluent in French’.

Though perhaps an uncommon nickname in Britain, one person explained that ‘it’s been a popular affectionate nickname in France for at least a century, mon petit choux!’

It is also believed that Her Majesty was also called ‘sausage’ by her husband, but it was her humorous vegetable moniker that seems to have stuck.

Eagle-eyed Reddit users also gave mention to a moment in popular Netflix drama, The Crown, where Queen Elizabeth, played by actress Olivia Colman, even refers to herself as ‘cabbage’.

In season three, episode four, the Duke (Tobias Menzies) frantically tries to get the attention of a woman through a telecommunication device by repeatedly calling her ‘sweetie’.

During that time the Queen’s coffin lay at rest in Edinburgh Cathedral before being moved to Westminster Hall in London, where an estimated 250,000 people queued for hours to file past and pay their respects during the lying-in-state.

Today, her loved ones are paying their respects – and have shared the heartwarming snap with wellwishers.

Thousands of comments showed of their ardent admiration for ‘inspiring’ Elizabeth, many admitting they ‘cannot believe’ it’s already been three years since her tragic passing.

‘She’s so missed and loved,’ one penned.

Queen Elizabeth II (L) and Britain's Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, leave St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle on May 18 2019. Harry paid his respects to her today

The Duke of Sussex arrived at Heathrow Airport this morning and was escorted straight to St George’s Chapel, at Windsor Castle, where he lay a wreath and flowers to mark the anniversary of his late grandmother who died on September 8 2022.

It meant he was just a 16-minute drive from Prince William, who is at an engagement for the late Queen in Sunningdale, Berkshire – as the estranged brothers were united in grief but still worlds apart.

In an unexpected turn, the Prince of Wales was joined by his wife, Catherine, who made a last-minute decision to support him at a Women’s Institute (WI) branch for the emotional third anniversary as she continues her return to royal duties.

Harry’s trip to the UK, which includes four days of engagements, will be his longest since he and Meghan visited in 2022 when Queen Elizabeth II died.

He has made the transatlantic trip on his own while Meghan stays in California with their children, Archie and Lilibet.

The duke was last in the UK in April when he lost his legal challenge over the level of security protection he receives from the Government while he is in Britain – after he and Meghan stepped down as working royals and moved to California in 2020.

Harry was appealing a ruling dismissing his challenge to the level of police protection he receives in the UK – but Judge Sir Geoffrey Vos ruled the duke’s ‘sense of grievance’ did not ‘translate into a legal argument’.

Significantly, however, Harry was spotted being picked up at Heathrow by a serving Metropolitan Police officer from the Royalty and Specialist Protection Squad, suggesting he is receiving bespoke police protection in the UK.
