Idris Elba was the DJ at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding in 2018 and has previously opened up about the couple’s big day
Idris Elba, the renowned actor known for his roles as Stringer Bell in HBO’s The Wire and the titular character in Luther, once revealed what really happened at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding.
The actor, who has a close friendship with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, played a significant role in one of the UK’s most unforgettable events – the Royal wedding of Meghan and Prince Harry at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle in 2018.
Elba, who was the DJ at the reception following the Royal couple’s wedding, shared some behind-the-scenes details from the big day. He revealed that the Duke and Duchess were completely at ease, owning the dance floor on their special day.”I think Meghan was the one that was really letting it go,” Elba told ET Canada, when asked about the best dancer at the Royal party.
“You know, she was real … she just had a lot of fun. It was her wedding. So she had the greatest time,” he added.
Despite feeling “so nervous” before his DJ gig, Elba said that Meghan helped him relax and even assisted in choosing the music for the evening.
Meghan sent me a playlist with some bare tunes on it,” he shared on BBC Radio 1Xtra in 2019.
Although he initially kept the night’s setlist under wraps, only hinting that “there was some West Coast on it,” the Luther star eventually revealed two of the songs that made the list.
Whitney Houston’s “I Want to Dance with Somebody,” which was the Royal couple’s first dance song, and Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E.,” were among the hits from the star-studded night, he disclosed.
A few years after tying the knot at their lavish ceremony, Harry and Meghan moved to California in June 2020 after stepping down as royals. Due to the media frenzy around them, they said they wanted space to raise Archie. Lilibet was then born there in 2021.
The couple no longer has an official UK residence, after being asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage, a Grade-II listed property on the Windsor estate.
Since moving across the pond for privacy, Harry and Meghan have both ventured into TV and personal projects. The Duke released his polo series on Netflix on December 10, 2024. Meanwhile, the former actress launched her lifestyle brand, As Ever, as well as a lifestyle series on Netflix.
