“This is an unimaginable horrific incident,” the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said

A woman was killed, and her husband was injured after they were struck by a snowplow at a transportation agency’s parking lot during this weekend’s heavy snowstorm.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) told PEOPLE in a statement that the deadly incident occurred on Sunday, Jan. 25, around 2 p.m. local time, when the married couple was walking through the MBTA Norwood Central parking lot in Norwood, Mass.

“At this time a non-MBTA employee working for a private company contracted by the MBTA for snow removal was operating a Ford F350 truck in reverse and struck the couple,” the MBTA said.

The 51-year-old woman was pronounced dead after suffering injuries, officials said. Her husband, 47, survived and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither has been identified at this time.

The plow truck operator remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, the agency added.

The MBTA said the incident is being investigated by transit police detectives in consultation with the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office. There were no further updates at this time.

“This is an unimaginable horrific incident,” the department said. “On behalf of the Transit Police and the entire MBTA organization we express our most sincere condolences to the victim’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

According to the National Weather Service, Norwood, which is located in Norfolk County, had a snowfall total of about 16.8 inches as of Monday, Jan. 26.

This weekend’s winter storm in the U.S. has so far killed at least 17 people and left hundreds of thousands without power, according to the BBC.
