The tragic events unfolded around 7pm when a couple were walking along a shoreline.

A random wave knocked Patricia del Pilar Bello Labe, 26, off balance and dragged her into the sea.

Her partner, Felipe Hernandez Bustos, immediately rushed into the water to try to save her, but soon began struggling against the powerful surf.

Ben, his father, Norman Ray Wood, 77, and his partner María José Duarte Ureta, 47, all rushed into the surf to try save the couple.

All three sadly drowned.

Patricia, a lawyer and parliamentary adviser, also died before she could be saved.

Only Felipe survived, rescued by Navy personnel in a naval helicopter.

The Chilean Legal Medical Service confirmed the cause of death for all four victims was asphyxia by submersion.

Ben was born in Connecticut but had lived in Chile for more than a decade.

He had become a recognised figure in the country’s craft beer and food scene, amassing almost 40,000 followers on Instagram.

He was also an entrepreneur, involved in several beer-related ventures and hospitality projects.

His post popular venture was the craft beer store Beervana, which he launched in 2013 and which helped introduce international beers to Chilean drinkers.

Ben was also linked to projects such as Alameda Beer Co and Craftwork Chile, and was one of the founders of the popular Santiago burger bar El Honesto Mike, known for pairing gourmet burgers with craft brews.

The 43-year-old also built a following on social media where he shared cooking content and recipes, again often featuring craft beer.
