DJ Unk is known to the world as the artist behind the 2006 smash hits “Walk It Out” and “2 Step.”

Family: Atlanta Hip-Hop icon DJ Unk's vigil was the party he would have wanted

“He always wanted to have people dance and be happy and come together,” said his sister, Tasha, affectionately known as “Miss Chocolate.”

DJ Unk rose to fame during the crunk and snap music era, but his journey started well before his Billboard success. Longtime friend and collaborator DJ Threat recalled his early days spinning records and keeping the party alive for teens across Atlanta.

“Atlanta is what made Unk,” said DJ Threat. “Growing up in the City of Atlanta — we kind of feed off what we see in our neighborhoods and communities.”

Antonio Eagle, a classmate and close friend, spoke of DJ Unk’s global influence.

“That’s legendary in itself. He was traveling to Japan and everything. He was going overseas,” Eagle said.

Even today, DJ Unk’s music continues to resonate. Grammy-nominated rapper GloRilla recently sampled one of his tracks in her song “Hold On,” keeping his sound alive on the charts in 2025.

Beyond the music, DJ Unk was remembered as a kindhearted man with a commitment to giving back.

“He did several events and charities — giveaways, and giving back to the community. And I’m sure everybody will be missing him,” DJ Threat added.

The vigil was filled with love and music, just as DJ Unk would have wanted. “He earned his wings,” his sister said.

DJ Unk leaves behind a legacy of joy, a wife and seven children, and a music family that continues to celebrate his impact. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced
