Hopes continue that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will come back to the royal fold but one expert has stated reasons why this will not happen – and they are controvesial

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not return to royal duties despite hopes among staunch monarchists, one expert has claimed.

Richard Eden, a journalist who has covered the royal family for 20 years, understands why some Harry and Meghan fans want the couple back in the UK with The Firm. However, he stated it “can’t happen” because of various reasons, including what he describes as “Meghan’s past behaviour.”

Princess Diana’s former lover, James Hewitt, was among several commentators this week to imply Harry, 40, wants a closer relationship with his family. In a rare interview, he said Diana “would be concerned” about the ongoing rift between Harry and Prince William.

Mr Eden acknowledged this in his column in the Daily Mail but the reporter said Harry and Meghan’s exhile in the USA is self-imposed. He wrote: “Call me paranoid, if you wish, but I do sense something of a conspiracy among certain parts of our Establishment to bring about a return of Harry and Meghan to the royal fold. There is no doubt that Harry is seeking a closer relationship with his family again.

“After King Charles’s cancer treatment was announced in February last year, his younger son let it be known via friends that he was willing to take on a temporary royal role in support of his father. His offer was never taken up, but the California-based Prince is understood to be keen to spend more time in his homeland.”

Mr Eden noted King Charles’ recent suggestion Harry and his family could support he and Queen Camilla. Monarchists, Mr Eden said, “still cling” to this notion with hope.

But the column then alludes to “Meghan’s past behaviour” as the primary reason the expert believes she and Harry will not return to the royal fold after their five-year absence.

Mr Eden added: “The Queen put much effort into making Meghan feel welcome, asking her to join her on a day of engagements in Cheshire, for example, and handing her the roles of patron of the National Theatre and vice president of The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust. These made the most of Meghan’s talents and interests.

“However, courtiers who were asked to work with Meghan say she sometimes gave the impression that she did not want to be a successful royal. They have told me she seemed to be looking for reasons to be resentful and encourage Harry to return with her to California, where she could make a stack of money.

“On Instagram, she recently stated that she had not been able to share her passion for food and home for ‘years’ after she shut her lifestyle blog The Tig, which provides further evidence that she was unhappy with the restrictions of royal life.”

His scathing take comes after the monarch’s “telling” moment in conversation with former Army captain and para-sports athlete, David Henson, at an event in London. David spoke to the King about previously competing in the Invictus Games, Charles simply replied: “Fantastic” – seemingly not willing to be drawn into a conversation about his youngest son and his sports event. This led to analysis among royal experts, including Roya Nikkhah and Kate Mansey, who said Charles could have used this as an opportunity to praise Harry but declined.
