Water has been restored and a burst pipe repaired after a sinkhole in the Sydney CBD forced a nearby school to close and left businesses cut off.

The sinkhole was believed to have been created by a burst water main pipe near St Mary’s Cathedral, between College St and Prince Albert Rd on Friday.

Up to 10 nearby businesses were forced to have their water supply shut off by Sydney Water for repairs to the damaged water main.

“The main has been isolated and water supply was restored to affected customers this afternoon,” a Sydney Water spokesman said on Friday night.

Temporary restoration works continue as Prince Albert Rd remains closed, with route diversions in place.

“Permanent repairs to the road are expected to be completed next week,” the spokesman said.

Students from St Mary’s Cathedral College next to the church were sent home for the day after the pipe burst and the sinkhole emerged.

That morning, a Coles truck that drove over the sinkhole became stuck, damaging its tyres and was forced to be towed out of the sinkhole.

The driver was safely able to leave his truck once helped.
