Suspected Human Remains Found at Phillip Island Holiday Home as Major Police Investigation Unfolds
A quiet coastal street on Victoria’s Phillip Island has become the centre of a major police investigation after plumbers uncovered what are believed to be human remains while carrying out routine work at a holiday home.
The gruesome discovery was made at a property on Hazelwood Court in Silverleaves at approximately 8:35am on Thursday, prompting Victoria Police to declare a crime scene and deploy specialist detectives.
According to police, plumbers were excavating the backyard to install a new septic tank when the disturbing find was made. A neighbour told news.com.au the workers had been using an excavator when something unexpected emerged from the soil.
“One of them pulled out a bit of sand and emptied the bucket,” the neighbour said. “That’s when a human skull rolled out of the dirt.”
The work immediately stopped, and authorities were called to the scene. Within minutes, police cordoned off the property as forensic teams arrived, transforming the once-peaceful holiday area into a tightly controlled investigation zone.

Victoria Police confirmed that detectives from the Homicide Squad were deployed, along with officers from the Missing Persons Unit, highlighting the potential seriousness of the discovery. Crime scene tape surrounded the home as investigators began a meticulous search of the yard and surrounding area.
In a statement, police said the remains would undergo forensic examination to determine whether they are human and, if so, to establish key details about the individual.
“The bones will undergo forensic testing, and at this stage, the circumstances surrounding the death of the person are yet to be determined,” a police spokesperson said.
“This includes whether the matter is suspicious.”
Sources close to the investigation say officers are working to determine how long the remains may have been buried, whether additional bones are present, and whether the discovery could be linked to a long-unsolved missing persons case.
The involvement of homicide detectives has sparked widespread speculation, although police have stressed it is too early to draw conclusions. Investigators are keeping an open mind as forensic experts analyse the remains for signs of trauma, age, sex, and potential cause of death.
Residents in the normally tranquil Silverleaves area described feeling shocked and unsettled by the unfolding events. Many said they had never known of any serious crime in the neighbourhood, which is largely made up of short-term holiday rentals and weekend homes.
“It’s terrifying,” one local resident said. “You come here thinking it’s peaceful, and then you realise something like this could have been hidden in the ground for years.”
The history of the property is now a key focus for detectives, who are expected to examine previous owners, long-term tenants, and any renovation or landscaping work carried out at the site in the past. Police are also reviewing missing persons records from across Victoria and beyond in an effort to identify the remains.
Forensic specialists are expected to determine whether the bones belong to someone who died recently or decades ago — a crucial factor that could decide whether the case becomes a modern homicide investigation or the reopening of a cold case.
The discovery has reignited concerns about how easily human remains can go unnoticed for long periods of time, particularly in holiday properties that may sit vacant for months or even years.
Victoria Police are urging anyone with information — no matter how minor it may seem — to come forward.
“Anyone with information about the matter is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report via the Crime Stoppers website,” police said.
As forensic testing continues and investigators piece together the history of the site, the grim discovery has left Phillip Island residents grappling with an unsettling reality: beneath the surface of an ordinary backyard, a dark and unknown story may have been waiting to be uncovered.
For now, the identity of the person — and how their remains came to rest beneath a family holiday home — remains a haunting mystery.
