Investigation sparked after man living in caravan with his dog dies during Taser arrest when cops held him down

A man who died during a chaotic arrest had lived in a caravan on his grandparents’ property for six months.

Cameron Bruce Voight died during his arrest on Opie Street in Clare, 140km north of Adelaide, after going on a rampage on Sunday afternoon.

The grieving grandparents of Voight, a 44-year-old from East Gawler, said he’d been living in the caravan with his dog in the hopes of getting a ‘fresh start’.

SA Police claimed Voight was destroying his grandparents’ property with a star picket and stabbed the picket through the wall of a neighbour’s shed.

Officers attempted to immobilise him with a Taser, but it was ineffective due to his thick jumper.

Neighbour Sorayah White said two officers had wrestled Voight to the ground after the Taser failed.

‘They did well. They weren’t rough and they were really trying to calm him down with words and stuff for a while,’ she told 9News on Monday.

He was held down for several minutes before he became unresponsive.

Assistant Commissioner David O’Donovan on Sunday confirmed the officers’ Taser had been ‘ineffective’.

‘Police were then involved in going hands-on with the offender,’ he said.

‘And obviously during the arrest it was then that he became unresponsive.’

Officers gave Voight first aid but he died at the scene.

His death will be subject to a police commissioner’s inquiry and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
