Footy World In Shock As Jai Arrow Forced To Retire At 30 After Devastating Motor Neurone Disease Diagnosis

The rugby league world has been left heartbroken after South Sydney Rabbitohs star Jai Arrow was forced into immediate retirement following a devastating diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND).
The 30-year-old forward, known as one of Queensland’s toughest State of Origin enforcers, confirmed Wednesday that ongoing medical testing had revealed a serious neurological condition linked to MND — an incurable and life-threatening disease that attacks the nerves controlling muscles.
Arrow had not played during the 2026 NRL season after initially suffering symptoms believed to be related to a shoulder injury during pre-season training. But behind the scenes, the situation had reportedly become far more serious as doctors conducted months of specialist testing.
In an emotional statement released through the Rabbitohs, Arrow revealed the frightening toll the illness has already taken on his daily life.
“Over recent months, my symptoms have affected different parts of my everyday life,” Arrow said, confirming he could no longer continue playing professionally.
The former Queensland Maroons representative reportedly became overwhelmed with emotion during a press conference announcing his retirement and was unable to publicly speak, with Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly reading his statement on his behalf.
Arrow thanked teammates, coaches, club staff, and family members for supporting him through what he described as the hardest period of his life.
The shock diagnosis immediately sent waves through the NRL community, with fans, former players, and rival clubs flooding social media with emotional tributes and messages of support.
Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett praised Arrow not only as a footballer, but as a person deeply respected throughout the game.
Bennett reportedly became emotional himself while speaking about the player, describing Arrow as a leader, a “father figure” within the club, and someone admired far beyond the football field.
Arrow retires after an impressive NRL career spanning nearly a decade.
After debuting for the Brisbane Broncos in 2016, he later played for the Gold Coast Titans before joining South Sydney Rabbitohs, where he became one of the club’s most beloved stars. Across his career, Arrow played 178 NRL games and represented Queensland in 12 State of Origin matches.
In 2025, he was named South Sydney’s Player of the Year and also earned recognition for his leadership and contributions off the field.
Motor neurone disease remains one of the most feared neurological illnesses in Australia and worldwide. The disease progressively damages nerve cells controlling movement, speech, swallowing, and breathing, with no known cure currently available.
Many fans immediately drew heartbreaking comparisons to former NRL star Carl Webb, who publicly battled MND before his d3ath in 2023.
As news of Arrow’s diagnosis spread, tributes poured in from across Australia’s sporting world, with supporters describing the announcement as “absolutely devastating” and “one of the saddest moments rugby league has seen in years.”
Despite the tragedy, those closest to Arrow say he remains determined to continue fighting alongside his family and medical team.
The Rabbitohs confirmed the club will continue supporting Arrow throughout treatment and rehabilitation as the football world rallies behind one of the game’s most respected players.
