DIY SOS legend Nick Knowles has admitted he was completely overwhelmed as he reflected on the upcoming Christmas special — revealing there were moments he feared the entire project would collapse.

The 63-year-old presenter, who has fronted the BBC renovation hit for more than two decades, appeared on Tuesday’s episode of This Morning alongside hosts Sian Welby and Craig Doyle, where he opened up about the emotional toll of filming the festive instalment.

Nick explained that the team had just finished shooting two full series back to back in addition to the Christmas episode, and they were genuinely concerned about whether anyone would volunteer this year.

“With people struggling to pay their bills and struggling to keep businesses afloat, we honestly worried people just wouldn’t turn out,” he said.

But what happened next completely stunned the show’s producers.

“We had the biggest response we’ve ever had in the 22 years of doing this — with two to three times the number of people we needed showing up to help.”

The festive special was filmed in Beverley, where the team partnered with a charity providing food for children in need. Originally operating under a one-sided gazebo, the crew made a bold decision to completely transform the project.

Nick told the hosts that after receiving council permission, the show opted to build a youth centre from scratch in a field.

“That was a massive undertaking,” he admitted. “Building from nothing in the middle of a field. There were moments where I genuinely thought, ‘We’re not going to make this.’”

He revealed that hundreds of volunteers stepped in, with every material donated, and the team often worked until midnight or the early hours to get the job done.

Craig later asked just how close the project came to falling apart. Nick didn’t hesitate.

“This one in particular… about two-thirds of the way through, it was just too much.”

After watching a clip from the episode, the DIY SOS star confessed the build had deeply affected him.

“It really got me,” he said quietly. “I kind of lost it at the end.”

When pressed on what made this project so powerful, Nick struggled to hold back tears and finally said:
“You’re going to have to watch it… because I’m starting to well up just thinking about it.”
