Two teenagers were riding on a motorbike when a BMW crashed into their vehicle, killing them.

The teens were riding on the bike, one driving and the other as the pillion passenger, when they were killed in the apparent hit-and-run in the early hours of Thursday, May 7, after a BMW struck their bike near Aberthaw Road in Newport, Wales, according to Gwent Police.

The victims, whom police only described as “males,” were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. They have since been identified as friends Jaydon Bowyer, 19, and Ta-Shay Canoville, 16, by multiple outlets, including the Daily Mail and the Mirror.

Police said that the early-morning collision “reportedly involved a BMW car and a motorbike,” and authorities believe that the BMW fled before officers arrived on the scene.

“An 18-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of murder, while a 24-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender,” police said. “All three remain in police custody.

Police also appealed to the public, seeking any eyewitnesses or area surveillance footage that may provide more insight into the fatal hit-and-run.

“Officers investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision would like to speak to anyone who was travelling along or residents who reside in Aberthaw Road and the surrounding areas to check their CCTV,” police said, noting that the crash occurred between midnight and 1:40 a.m. local time on May 7.

“Anyone with information — including CCTV and dashcam footage — is asked to contact us quoting log reference 2600141467,” Gwent Police said.

A Gwent Police spokesperson did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, May 10.

The Wales police force also said that “specially trained officers will be allocated to support the families throughout the investigation.”

Bowyer’s mother, Sophie Louise Pederson, shared an emotional tribute to her “darling darling boy” on Facebook on May 7. “Whyyy just whyyy” she wrote alongside a photo of the mother and son. “How do I live without you here by my side.”
