The growing rift between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the royal family appears more permanent than ever, as Prince Harry’s absence from King Charles III’s birthday celebrations underscores a deeply personal and security-driven decision. Now, royal insiders say that Meghan Markle is “terrified” about the possibility of bringing her children back to the UK—and that concern may have “sealed” Harry’s decision not to return.
A Painful Absence
As senior royals gathered in London last weekend to mark Trooping the Colour, an event celebrating the monarch’s official birthday, Prince Harry was notably absent. King Charles appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony alongside Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Catherine, and their children—George, Charlotte, and Louis—but there was no sign of Harry, Meghan, or their children, Archie and Lilibet.
While Harry, 40, has previously expressed hope for reconciliation with his father, royal experts now say that his absence signals a deeper reality: his return to the UK is unlikely—possibly permanent—due to security fears that Meghan Markle sees as very real and very dangerous.
Security Fears ‘Very Real’
According to royal commentator Duncan Larcombe, the Sussexes’ concerns are not exaggerated. “The threats are real and genuine,” Larcombe stated. “There are lunatics, radical protesters, and even terrorist threats that make Harry and his family high-profile targets.”
Larcombe emphasized that Meghan would never risk her children’s safety, and that’s the primary factor driving the couple’s continued distance from the UK. “She understandably feels scared about coming to the UK with the children,” he said.
A source close to the couple echoed this sentiment:
“Any parent would panic in Meghan’s shoes. She’s feeling more empowered now, but she’s still terrified about putting the kids at risk.”
A Family Divided
Prince Harry has previously battled for the right to pay for police protection while in the UK, a case he lost in May. Since then, the likelihood of his children forming close bonds with their royal cousins appears to be fading. Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4, have now spent nearly all their young lives in the U.S., far removed from the traditions and visibility of the British royal family.
Despite a more open approach to sharing their lives on social media—including Meghan’s recent viral dance video and family snapshots from Disneyland—the couple is drawing a sharp line when it comes to UK visits.
“It’s been five years since they left the UK,” the source added. “Even though Harry is really feeling the absence of his father—especially after Trooping the Colour and Father’s Day—the security issue will always be a major barrier.”
A Heartbreaking Reality
While Meghan is said to be growing more confident in her public role in the U.S., Harry is reportedly feeling the emotional weight of separation, particularly as his father’s health takes a more serious turn. But barring significant changes in royal security provisions, sources say the Sussexes’ return to Britain—for any meaningful family reunion—seems increasingly out of reach.
“It’s heartbreaking,” the insider concluded. “Harry knows things could’ve been very different. But at this point, even visits are looking less and less likely.”
