Grammy-nominated rapper Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to third-degree rape in a Louisiana case that has drawn national attention and marked another major legal setback in the artist’s career.

The rapper, whose real name is Michael Tyler, was sentenced Tuesday in a Louisiana courtroom following an incident that occurred in 2022. The sentence comes after Tyler entered a guilty plea earlier this year, reducing the original first-degree rape charge to third-degree rape.

According to court proceedings, the victim addressed the court before sentencing and requested the maximum penalty available under state law.

Prosecutors said the woman suffered significant injuries during the encounter and later identified Tyler as her attacker while receiving treatment at a hospital.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the victim described a violent assault that she said left both physical and emotional scars.

According to local reports, she testified that Tyler punched and choked her, pulled braids from her hair, and forcibly assaulted her during the 2022 incident.

When given an opportunity to speak before sentencing, Tyler made a brief statement to the court.

“If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence,” he reportedly said before the judge handed down a 20-year prison term.

Under Louisiana law, third-degree rape carries a maximum sentence of 25 years without eligibility for probation or early release.

Tyler’s attorneys attempted to withdraw his guilty plea shortly before sentencing. However, the court rejected the motion and proceeded with the sentencing hearing.

A Long History of Legal Troubles

The latest conviction is not the first time Mystikal has faced serious criminal allegations.

In 2003, the rapper pleaded guilty to sexual battery charges and served approximately six years in prison before being released in 2010.

Years later, he again found himself at the center of a high-profile criminal investigation involving allegations of rape and kidnapping.

Those charges stemmed from accusations made in 2016. Tyler spent roughly 18 months in jail before securing release on bond. However, prosecutors ultimately dropped the case in 2020 after a second grand jury declined to issue an indictment.

That outcome allowed Tyler to avoid trial in the earlier case, but the 2022 allegations led to a separate investigation that ultimately resulted in this year’s guilty plea and sentencing.
