Tom Jones is loved around the world for his soulful voice. But he previously revealed the secret to what’s kept his vocal chords in good condition over the years

When it comes to ageing like a fine wine, it’s fair to stay Sir Tom Jones has managed to pull it off.

He looks amazing, is full of energy on stage and it feels like his voice has been perfection since – well – forever. Though he entered the global music scene way back in the 1960s, he’s still entertaining us all today.

At the age of 84, he’s still belting out his much-loved hits with as much passion as ever. And, let’s be honest, his voice hasn’t changed a bit.

When you see the Pontypridd-born singer perform, you may wonder how his voice has managed to stay so good for so long. But, thanks to TikTok, we may just have the answer.

A previous interview with Jeremy Clarkson has recently resurfaced where Sir Tom was asked what’s helped to maintain his voice over the years, and his answer was pretty simple.

For him, he admitted age doesn’t seem to have hindered his voice in any way, but he does swear by one thing. When asked what he uses to aid his voice, he simply replied: “Vocalzones. They’re great – they’re unbelievable.”

If you’ve never heard of Vocalzones before, they’re essentially throat pastilles that help people to keep a clear voice. They are usually consumed to help relieve throat irritation or dryness which can occur if you have been talking, singing or smoking excessively or if you have a cold.

According to Sir Tom, they’ve been a big help to him over the years, even though Clarkson told him they taste “disgusting”. For the Welsh singing legend, they are an essential part of his regime.

Since the video was shared, people can’t believe his method is so easy. It seems some secrets to success are a lot simpler than we think.

Over the years, Sir Tom’s voice has been described as a “full-throated, robust baritone”. In the past, he’s also admitted that his young voice was a tenor voice.

It was way back in 1963 that he first became the frontman for Tommy Scott and the Senators, which were a Welsh beat group. They soon attracted a big following and developed quite a reputation in South Wales.

In 1964, the group recorded several solo tracks with producer, Joe Meek, who took them to various record labels, but they didn’t have much success. Later down the line, Decca producer Peter Sullivan saw Tommy Scott and the Senators while they were performing at a club and directed them to manager Phil Solomon. However, this partnership didn’t last long.

The group continued to play around South Wales until Sir Tom met Gordon Mills, who became his manager and introduced him to London. Mills renamed him “Tom Jones” due to the popularity of the Academy Award-winning 1963 film, and it was the beginning of what would become a thriving career.
