On the set of ping-pong flick Marty Supreme, the actor remixed his old-school costume with some new-school kicks.
In the upcoming film Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet plays a ping-pong champion who, inadvertently, has also become a menswear hero before the film’s even wrapped filming.
Yes, there’s director Josh Safdie’s magic touch. Yes, there’s cinematographer Darius Khondji’s signature eye. But since a slew of big fits have appeared on set in New York, this may well be a fashion movie in the making. And the sign of a period costume that’s truly timeless? It’ll work with some super futuristic Salomons that Chalamet has wearing during production.
Known as the XA Pro 3D V9, this grippy sneaker was introduced earlier this year, and it’s the latest installment in the brand’s XA Pro 3D series. It’s not as hype-y as other Salomon silhouettes like the XT-4, the XT-6, or even the ACS Pro, but it’s not meant to be. This is an actual trail running shoe made for actual trail runners, and so maximum technicality comes first.

It’s got everything a mountain man needs. It’s made from tightly-knit mesh. It’s wrapped in lots of durable rubber. It’s fitted with laces that you can loosen and fasten on the go. It sits on top of a chunky grippy sole that was specifically designed to tackle all types of surfaces. So whether you’re trekking a craggy trail or running around the streets of New York City while filming a movie, these will hit.
In a time when old classics work with future classics, the XA Pro 3D V9 are a solid aesthetic match for the Chalamet’s 1950s-era costume of a white tank and slacks. But there’s also a need for comfort here—and on long shoot days, a busy actor ought to protect his precious soles over all else.
