Just two years ago, Patrick Mahomes won his second ring with the Kansas City Chiefs, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII thanks to a late field goal by kicker Harrison Butker.

This year, we got a much different outcome, as the Eagles got their revenge and crushed the Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX from the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

It took Mahomes and the Chiefs nearly three quarters before getting on the board, thanks to a touchdown pass to wide receiver Xavier Worthy. But by then, the Eagles had already taken a 30+ point lead. The former Texas Tech quarterback struggled early on, throwing two interceptions in the first half that led to 14 Philadelphia points.

Mahomes knew he had lost the game before the clock hit zero. Cameras captured the quarterback’s reaction to losing in the Super Bowl for the second time. An emotional Mahomes can be seen receiving some support from a teammate and coach.

Mahomes finished the night completing 21-of-32 passes for 257 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 25 yards on the ground. But it wasn’t close to enough to compete with Saquon Barkley and the Eagles offense, outgaining the Chiefs 345 total yards to 275.

Although the Chiefs were unable to pull off the first three-peat in NFL history, they have still become one of the greatest dynasties the league has ever seen. Since Mahomes became the starter in 2018, they have made the AFC championship every season. Not to mention his three Super Bowl wins.

This was not the first time Mahomes has been blown out in the Super Bowl. In Super Bowl LV, he was defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-9, Tom Brady’s seventh championship win. Brady was in attendance for Sunday’s game, calling it for Fox Sports alongside Kevin Burkhardt and sideline reporter Erin Andrews.
