Decoding Rodgers’ Free Agency: Why Steelers, Vikings, Giants Aren’t His Top Picks

After a frenzied first 72 hours, the 2025 NFL’s free agency period has lost a bit of steam — save for a few notable exceptions.

Who is Aaron Rodgers signing with? Why four-time MVP hasn't committed to Steelers, Vikings, Giants image

A handful of high-profile departures and arrivals lie in repose, with Cooper Kupp, Russell Wilson and Trey Hendrickson all attempting to unearth their still murky futures. Then there’s Aaron Rodgers, the biggest name still unsigned to an NFL roster.

Rodgers authored up a decent year in Jets green in terms of statistics, showcasing flashes of his Hall-of-Fame caliber play. He was far from perfect — his 90.5 passer rating in 2024 was his worst mark since becoming a full-time starter. Nevertheless, he remains an intriguing name in the winding carousel that is NFL free agency. And he has a triumvirate of suitors hoping to coax him into joining their rosters in 2025.

So, just who is Rodgers signing with? The Sporting News has the latest updates on Rodgers as he seeks a new home in 2025.

Who is Aaron Rodgers signing with in 2025?

As of Friday, March 14, Rodgers has yet to make a decision on his future. He has a trio of franchises interested in his services, all of whom exist on different parts of the league’s totem pole.

The Steelers and Giants are believed to have expressed serious interest in Rodgers’ services, with multiple reports indicating that both sides have made an offer to the 41-year old gunslinger.

Pittsburgh parted ways with Justin Fields, who subsequently landed with Rodgers’ former employers, the Jets, while Wilson’s future remains up in the air — the Browns and Giants have pegged him as a potential option under center. The Steelers did add Mason Rudolph back to their corps. But according to The Athletic’s Diana Russini, that hasn’t quelled any interest in Rodgers, who reportedly has yet to give Pittsburgh a firm answer on his future plans.

New York finds itself in a similar position in the Rodgers sweepstakes. The Giants have both the cap flexibility and roster space to make Rodgers’ addition relatively painless. And, according to SNY’s Connor Hughes, the organization has made Rodgers their utmost priority.

But Rodgers’ desires are still unclear. One reason for the hold-up? Minnesota’s looming presence in potential negotiations. On March 12, Russini reported that the Vikings were “evaluating” the possibility of adding Rodgers to their roster.

“The four-time MVP is intrigued by the idea of playing in Minnesota,” Russini wrote.

It’s easy to see why Rodgers would prefer a route to Minnesota. While J.J. McCarthy remains the QB of the future in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, his 2025 prospects are shrouded in uncertainty after missing the whole of his maiden season with a torn meniscus in his right knee.

The Vikings established themselves as one of the NFL’s best squads in 2024, with Kevin O’Connell helping transform Sam Darnold. Minnesota nabbed 14 wins during the regular season, tied for the second highest-mark in football. With Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson and Aaron Jones making up the offense’s core, there’s plenty of reason to believe Minnesota could have success. And Rodgers, for all of his uneven play in 2024, still appears capable of leading a sold team—particularly when that side plays half its matches indoors.

Based on the tea leaves — as well as Russini’s reporting — Rodgers appears to want the Vikings to make an offer. Minnesota is still mulling whether it wants another hurler — the Vikings lost Darnold and backup Daniel Jones in free agency. Per Russini, Rodgers is content with giving Minnesota time to come to a decision. Once Kevin O’Connell’s squad does that, Rodgers will make one for himself.

Aaron Rodgers age

Rodgers is the oldest active player in the NFL, having celebrated his 41st birthday in December. He still has a ways to go before catching Tom Brady, who started games until his age-45 season.

But Rodgers compares favorably to other signal callers to lead their teams at 40+ years old. Rodgers tallied the fourth-most touchdowns and sixth-most passing yards of any 40+ year old QB per Statmuse, trailing only Brady in both markers.

Aaron Rodgers stats

Rodgers might’ve been at the heart of the Jets’ uneasy 2024 campaign. But his counting stats were fairly strong, especially for a man of his age. Rodgers completed 63 percent of his passes, accounting for nearly 4,000 yards of passing offense with Gang Green. He threw for 28 touchdowns, the joint-seventh-best mark in the NFL. For comparison, Rodgers tallied the same amount of passing scores as league MVP Josh Allen, two more passing TDs than Patrick Mahomes and three more passing TDs than Jayden Daniels—albeit they all play differently from one another. Rodgers’ 11 interception tally was tied for the third-worst mark of his big-league career. But it was one fewer than Darnold.

Here’s a look at Rodgers’ numbers over the course of his glimmering career.

Aaron Rodgers contract projection

Rodgers exists in a compelling plane among big-league passers. His age and injury history likely won’t inspire confidence among the majority of NFL front offices. But his production, while waning, remains fairly solid.

It seems unlikely that Rodgers will ink a veteran minimum like Wilson did in 2024 — as a post-June 1 cut, he won’t be receiving paychecks from the Jets.

Given his standing around the league, a deal between $20-$25 million seems the most palatable option for organizations courting Rodgers. That can be obtained through a number of ways — Rodgers’ deal could be split up with bonuses and incentives to maintain an organization’s salary cap flexibility. But desperate times also call for desperate measures sometimes, and it’s entirely posible one of the three teams could make him an offer he can’t refuse.

When will Aaron Rodgers make his free agency decision?

Rodgers has exercised patience throughout free agency. It seems that fans will have to do the same; there’s no real timetable on an announcement regarding Rodgers’ future plans.
