Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs face changes ahead of the 2025 NFL season following a disappointing Super Bowl loss.
Super Bowl LIX was a great opportunity for the Kansas City Chiefs to continue adding to their legacy, but the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles puts Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes in a tough spot ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
A victory would’ve allowed the Chiefs to go through the offseason in high spirits, even if the market always leads to changes and players getting paid elsewhere. Apart from losing the Super Bowl, Reid and Mahomes are expected to lose important contributors this summer.
The Chiefs, for instance, may find it hard to bring back Carson Wentz next year. The veteran quarterback, who served as Mahomes‘ backup in 2024, will probably draw interest in free agency, with an AFC rival expected to make a move.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Cleveland Browns are a team to watch for Wentz. Even though they’re expected to select a quarterback with the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the team could use an experienced signal-caller to mentor the rookie.

Wentz’s season as Mahomes’ backup on Reid’s Chiefs
Wentz, 32, joined the Chiefs last year to provide insurance behind Mahomes in the QB room. With him, Kansas City secured a seasoned player in the NFL capable of stepping in if needed.
Reid only started him in the 2024 NFL regular season finale to rest Mahomes, with Wentz completing 12 of 19 passes for 118 pass yards in Week 18 against the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs were shut down to a 0-38 loss that day, and while Wentz failed to throw for a touchdown, he finished with zero turnovers as well.
A fresh start for Wentz in the NFL?
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Wentz, a quarterback whose career changed after an ACL injury in 2016. That year, he was playing at an MVP level for the Philadelphia Eagles in his second season in the NFL.
The team ended up moving on from him to promote Jalen Hurts, and despite having chances to revitalize his career with the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders, Wentz failed to establish himself as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
He finished the 2023 NFL season as Matthew Stafford’s backup on the Los Angeles Rams before joining Reid and Mahomes’ Chiefs, but 2025 might give him another opportunity to start with teams like the Browns, who could use a bridge quarterback before handing the reins to a rookie.
